MARIETTA - This Sunday, local musicians will join together at the Earl Smith Strand Theatre for The Band Aid Relief Benefit for Clarkdale Elementary. Clarkdale Elementary School, in Austell, was deemed a total loss after water rose up to 10 feet during September's epic flood.

Proceeds from the benefit will go towards the school and Clarkdale Elementary teachers and students.

"Sixty percent of the kids lost their homes in the flood, too, because they live in close proximity to the school," said benefit organizer John Lockamy. "This benefit is a great way to help the school. It was completely flooded and these kids lost everything. It's a great way for the community to come together to help the school out."

The benefit's headliner is Liberty Jones, a local group that has garnered national attention after their 2006 album release - aptly titled "Atlanta, Ga." In August, the band opened for The Marshall Tucker Band at the Mable House Barnes Amphitheatre.

Several other bands have signed on for the benefit, including Lockamy's band, Mad Mell. Lockamy is the bass player for the group. He described the music that will be played at Sunday's benefit as a mixture of classic rock, country and blues. There will also be an acoustic set.

"This will be a great afternoon filled with music, good times and giving back to what the school has given to the Cobb County community - educated children that are wise beyond their years," Lockamy said.

Clarkdale's students have been able to continue their studies at Compton and Austell Elementary Schools since their school was closed.

Clarkdale Elementary Principal Marjorie Bickerstaff said she is appreciative of the donations and funds that have poured in from all over the country to help the students and staff.

"We are so grateful for the continued community support that we are receiving. We never realized just how big our Clarkdale family is," she said.

Tickets for The Band Aid Relief Benefit for Clarkdale Elementary are $12. They can be purchased at www.earlsmithstrand.org or by calling the box office at (770) 293-0080.

The Band Aid Relief Benefit for Clarkdale Elementary will take place Sunday from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. The benefit is an alcohol-free event.
