After all the summer workouts, hard practices and nine football games, we have finally reached the end of the regular season.
As the teams around Cobb County prepare to play Week 11, 10 teams still have an opportunity to be playing when the state playoffs begin next week.
Here is what I think will happen to those that still have a chance.
McEachern, Lassiter and Whitefield Academy are already in, but I think the Indians and Trojans will win to complete perfect regular seasons while the Wolfpack will have a tough time with Eagles Landing Christian. That should make Whitefield Academy the No. 4 seed in Region 5A.
Pebblebrook – They will win and will end up playing a mini-game on Monday to break a three-way tie for the No. 4 spot in Region 4AAAAA with Creekside and Chapel Hill.
Harrison – It was a valiant effort this year for the Hoyas, after losing so many talented players, but not enough to claim a 5AAAAA playoff spot. The Hoyas lose to Etowah.
Marietta – Two weeks ago the Blue Devils were and afterthought, but when they beat Kennesaw Mountain, Cherokee loses to McEachern, Harrison loses to Etowah and East Paulding loses to Woodstock, Marietta will claim the No. 4 spot from Region 5AAAAA through a series of tie-breakers.
Kell – The Longhorns are on a five-game winning streak and catch Milton on a four-game losing skid. I expect the trends to continue and Kell will earn the No. 3 seed from Region 6AAAAA.
Walton/Pope – For the last three weeks, we have said all Walton needs to do is win and they are in the playoffs, but they haven’t been able to get it done. Unfortunately, they won’t get it done against the Greyhounds either. Pope beats Walton, both teams finish 6-4.
The win would keep the Greyhounds alive for a playoff spot, but they end up losing a tiebreaker to Centennial when the Knights beat Wheeler. Centennial gets the No. 4 seed in Region 6AAAAA while Pope and Walton head home.
Sprayberry – For seven weeks, it seemed like the Yellow Jackets could have beaten anyone in the county. Then they lost a two-touchdown lead to Hiram. Now the question is can they get back up to face a Sequoyah team that is playing some good football right now? If it doesn’t, Sprayberry will be on the sidelines watching the playoffs.
So, here will be the playoff teams from Cobb County when the playoffs start a week from Friday:
In Class AAAAA – McEachern, Lassiter, Marietta and Kell
In Class AAAA – Sprayberry
And in Class A – Whitefield Academy
Let’s call them the Super 6.
But, that’s just my opinion.
What do you think?
