A NEW BOOK, "175 Facts About Marietta," a timeline history of the city, is completed and in the printer's hands. Published by the City of Marietta, the 76-page four-color, soft-cover book will be released in mid-November.

The history features many color, black and white and sepia photos and drawings portraying the community from its founding in the early 1830s until today. Marietta author Becky Paden wrote the text, Fair Oaks na ve Joe McTyre did the photography and layout and new Marietta resident Barbara King did the original art work.

Upon release, the new publication will sell at $10 a copy. The steering committee commissioned the book as part of the 175th anniversary observance this year. Plans tentatively call for defraying some anniversary celebration expenses with book profits.

You can step back in history and meet some men and women who have played important roles in the 175 years of Marietta's history. They include William Root, Steadman V. Sanford, Mary Phagan, the Rev. Thomas Milton Allen, S.V. Sanford and many more.

On Oct. 24, at 11 a.m. there will be the rare chance to take guided tours through the Marietta City Cemetery (founded in 1834), the Marietta Confederate Cemetery (founded in 1863) and the Marietta National Cemetery, founded in 1866. The last tour will begin at 2:30 p.m. Standing at the graves of numerous former Marietta residents will be volunteers dressed in period costume to tell the story of the people buried there - their lives, their accomplishments, their roles in Marietta history. The Historic Marietta Trolley will transport visitors between cemeteries and an onboard guide will share other history during the ride.

To begin the tours at the Marietta City or Confederate Cemeteries, park at the Hilton Hotel and Conference Center (formerly known as the Marietta Conference Center) at 505 Powder Springs St. If you prefer to begin your tour at the National Cemetery at 500 Washington Ave., park nearby at the Bank of North Georgia.

Tickets for all three tours and the trolley are $15 each. Sponsoring the event, which is part of Marietta's 175th Birthday Celebration, are the Marietta Cemetery Foundation, Cobb Landmarks and Historical Society, Keep Marietta Beautiful and the City of Marietta. Tickets can be purchased in advance at the Marietta Museum of History, the Marietta Welcome Center and at the Marietta Parks and Recreation Department at City Hall. Tickets now are available on site. THE STRAND THEATRE on Oct. 25 will have the original 1924 "Phantom of the Opera" silent film with Ron Carter, secretary of the Friends of the Strand Board and board member of the Atlanta Chapter of the American Theatre Organ Society, accompanying on the mighty Allen Theatre Organ and a preshow and sing-a-long by Phillip Allen at 2:30 p.m. This is the definitive "Phantom" film, digitally restored, that will be screened throughout the world during the Halloween season and the first full-length feature silent film at the Strand Theatre. Silents were never really silent and Carter has an orchestral score that will make the film come alive.

THE MARIETTA ROTARY CLUB will gather Wednesday at 12:15 p.m. for its 90th birthday celebration. The club will host about 125 civic leaders and club members at the Marietta Conference Center.

PEOPLE: Lori Lite, the Marietta mother who was on ABC's "Shark Tank," recently got an agreement from Borders nationwide to sell a few of her titles. This will be her first retail partner. Also, Lite has reached 17,000-hits on her YouTube video.

"GONE WITH THE WIND" at the Strand Theater will be Nov. 14. From 6:30 to 7:45 p.m. there will be a tribute to Warner Brothers, Turner Classic Movies and others that have been involved in the ongoing success of the movie. From 7:45 to midnight, there will be a showing of "Gone With The Wind" with an intermission.

THE MARIETTA MUSEUM OF HISTORY'S volunteer field trip to the Tellus Museum in Cartersville is Oct. 26. Attendees will meet in the MMH parking lot at 11:30, then carpool to Cracker Barrel to have lunch, arriving at Tellus around 1 p.m.
