First Lieutenant Richard Armstrong, a 14-year veteran of the United States Marine Corps and the United States Army was one of those heroes who keep America free.

After enlisting at the age of 17, 1st Lt. Armstrong, served in Marine Reconnaissance, qualified as a Navy Combat Diver, became a Green Beret, and was just short of earning his flight wings when he became permanently disabled because of a service-connected illness.

Armstrong's daughter, Carly, a Marietta resident, recently received a college scholarship from Freedom Alliance Scholarship Fund. She is a freshman at the University of Mississippi. Her sister, Cameron, has been on scholarship for three years.

Lt. Armstrong, who passed away a few years after Carly's birth, was awarded a number of medals and commendations for his service including the Humanitarian Service Medal and the Navy Achievement Medal.

The Freedom Alliance Scholarship Fund has awarded more than $3 million to the sons and daughters of military heroes. Visit www.fascholarship.com or www.freedomalliance.org.
