I lamented the fact that despite the great service they had given us, I had never had the presence of mind to thank them nor had I taken the time to learn their names. After the floods had hit, I wondered what would happen to them and to their business. I hoped they were okay and wished they knew how worried we were for their safety and whether or not I would ever see them again.
This week, my wife and I decided to drive down to their shop to see what we could learn. Imagine our surprise – no, shock – to see their smiling faces and them hard at work. Hoonjae Jung and Eunsub Lee are back in business at Sentry Cleaners in Vinings. Their building is without the counter where they once greeted us and the place looks a little worse for wear, but the couple is serving its regular clientele from behind a small table until repairs are made, which they estimate will take six weeks or so.
Their service ethic has impressed me since the first time I walked into their establishment and it was never put to test more than when the waters of the Chattahoochee began to spill over its banks. Unlike some of us, they sensed what was coming and removed all the dry cleaning from the store before the muddy waters could do them damage.
We were not the only ones who rejoiced at seeing them. Several customers came in while we were there and seemed as happy as we did. That is a testimony to how the neighborhood has come to regard them.
It was a good feeling to see how these two hard-working, enterprising people who have been in the U.S. for a few short years took Mother Nature’s best shot and survived. It was also a reminder to me to appreciate good service and to get to know the people who provide it. Hoonjae Jung and Eunsub Lee: Thank you and welcome back.
