MARIETTA - Businesses and organizations continue making donations and offering assistance in wake of last week's devastating flood.

Damage to unincorporated Cobb alone is estimated at $10 million.

The following is a list of recent updates, donations, assistance and volunteer efforts available to aid victims of last week's flood.

Updates

* Norfolk Southern's rail yard in Austell is still in operation, the Norfolk, Va.-based corporation reported.

From Sept. 21 to Sept. 24, trucks were not able to enter Norfolk's nearby intermodal facility. However, the 450-acre rail yard never stopped operating during that time, Norfolk spokeswoman Susan Terpay said. The intermodal facility is a rail terminal for transferring freight in containers between trucks and trains. The Austell intermodal facility is the largest in the country, Terpay said.

She said water was over railways and that a few pieces of equipment were damaged, without giving details. Trains were re-routed, she said.

About eight trains move through the rail yard daily. It opened in October 2001.

* Many trees remain down on trails throughout the Chattahoochee River National Recreation Area and some trials in low lying areas are extremely muddy and have been washed away at some locations; however, some units have reopened for visitor use. In Cobb, the Gold Branch unit is now open, as are the Columns Drive, Sope Creek and Powers Island parking lots and remaining trails, including the two-mile fitness loop trail at Cochran Shoals. The Interstate North parking lot at Cochran Shoals, however, remains closed, as does the Paces Mill parking lot and boat landing.

Due to partially treated wastewater seeping into the river following the floods, and the resulting E. coli problem, park officials advise people to avoid contact with the water.

* All roads are now open in Austell, Mayor Joe Jerkins said.

Donations

* Target donated $100,000 in cash and product donations to support flood relief efforts in northwest Georgia Thursday. As part of the commitment, $10,000 in Target Gift Cards was given to teachers and students of Clarkdale Elementary School in Austell. The school was evacuated after prolonged rains caused the Sweetwater Creek to overflow, nearly submerging the school and devastating homes in the surrounding area.

* Nestle Waters North America is donating 5,000 one-gallon bottles of water to residents affected by the flood who are in need of more water. The water was delivered to the American Red Cross' Relief Operation Warehouse in Forest Park. Distribution began Thursday.

Distribution centers include the Powder Springs Police Department at 4483 Pineview Drive in Powder Springs; the Austell Shopping Center at 5875 Love Street in Austell; and Westridge Church at 3522 Hiram-Acworth Highway in Dallas.

* Sweetwater Valley C.A.M.P. located at 6289 Veterans Memorial Highway in Austell has been designated as a central location for flood assistance. Beginning Monday, flood victims can come anytime Monday through Saturday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m..
