Cobb Commission Chairman Sam Olens, who is seeking the Republican nomination for state attorney general, has picked up endorsements from some GOP leaders in the General Assembly including Speaker Pro Tempore Mark Burkhalter, Senate President Pro Tempore Tommie Williams and Senate Majority Leader Chip Rogers. The candidate also is backed by Rep. Earl Ehrhart, chairman of the House Rules Committee.

Olens now has a lengthening list of endorsements running the gamut from fellow commissioners to mayors, sheriffs and other state legislators. One endorsement that’s off the beaten path is that of Joe McCutchen, Jr., identified as an Ellijay talk show host. He also publishes a political newsletter mailed around the state and that could be a plus for Olens. McCutchen’s pendant for calling news shows earned him the nickname of the “Number One Call-In Man in America” at CNN, according to another Ellijay institution, Colonel Oscar Poole of barbecue fame. The two have formed the McCutchen-Poole Small Business Coalition to rally others to fix the “Mess we’re in.”

Olens also got some bragging rights from “three big straw poll wins in the last month,” per his news release. The polls were conducted at Republican events in DeKalb, Muscogee and Union counties.

The candidate from Cobb may well be ahead in this race. Case in point: can you name the other candidates in this race? Next question: does it matter?

I have seen Mr. Olens at work in zoning matters and ask how is this man a Republican when he often would not have the courage to abide by the laws of the zoning ordinance and instead would deny the property rights of an individual because of the majority (as do the other Commissioners). In this nation, law rules not the majority. Or in the case of the Cobb County BOC votes rule.

Yes I can. And I can also name the Democratic candidate too. Don, why are you such a shill for Republican candidates? Some of your columns are nothing more than extended interviews with Johnny or Saxby. Why don't you ever do a column on a

Democratic candidate for state wide office? I can think of two we have who live right here in Cobb County.
