Local kids fighting to live: In recognition of National Childhood Cancer Month in September, Atlanta-based CURE Childhood Cancer is heading a uniquely personal drive to raise money and awareness and help fund a cure for childhood cancer, the #1 disease killer of children in the U.S. today.

Kennesaw, GA, September, 2009 -- According to CURE Childhood Cancer, one of the country's most aggressive organizations dedicated to funding pediatric cancer research, many people in the United States have no idea that cancer is the #1 disease killer, and second leading cause of death, in children (accidents are the leading cause) and the organization's board of directors wants that to change. In fact, the non-profit is putting a different face on childhood cancer every single day in September. Literally.

A special program to raise a $1,000 a day, each day, throughout September called CURE's Kids Conquer Cancer One Day At A Time will honor a special child personally affected by childhood cancer, announces CURE Childhood Cancer's Executive Director Kristin Connor. Some of the featured children, or CURE Kids, are in the midst of their fight, some have conquered the disease, and some who died at the hands of the dreaded disease. Each child will be honored on a specific day throughout the month of September.

"Each day in September, we will share with our community the story of one or two featured children and ask people to honor these brave warriors with their donations," says Connor. "Our goal at month's end is to raise $30,000 to put toward the fight to end childhood cancer in our lifetime while also honoring these very special children... one day at a time."

This very personal fundraising initiative will feature 50 different children on CURE’s web site (www.curechildhoodcancer.org), its blog, and on www.firstgiving.com/curechildhoodcancer. Each of the honored children’s photos and unique stories will be featured daily, chronicling their brave journeys. Donations in their honor will help fund research that will lead to better treatments and cures for pediatric cancers.

"It would also be exciting for companies to step up and match what CURE Childhood Cancer raises in recognition of these brave children," notes Connor. For those who want to donate but not to a specific child, donations can be made to CURE's general September fund by contacting Connor at 770-986-0035 or by visiting www.curechildhoodcancer.org.

Atlanta, Georgia-based CURE Childhood Cancer was founded in 1975 and is dedicated to raising funds for cancer research and to help children with cancer, and their families, through education and urgent care support programs. Over the last three years, over $3 million has been donated by CURE Childhood Cancer for cancer research, to fund a cure for pediatric cancer through research at the Aflac Cancer Center and Blood Disorders Service at Children's Healthcare of Atlanta and Emory University.
