CANTON - North Cobb visited Sequoyah for a tri-match Thursday and came away with a pair of victories against the Lady Chiefs and Woodstock.
North Cobb, ranked eighth in the latest GaSports.com Class AAAAA coaches poll, defeated the Lady Wolverines (25-12, 25-23) and topped Class AAAA No. 5 Sequoyah (25-19, 25-19).
The wins improved North Cobb to 11-2 on the season.
"Anytime you can come into someone else's gym and win, you'll take it," North Cobb coach James Auld said. "Sequoyah is such a well-prepared team and (coach) Kelly (Audia) always has them ready to play.
"In our other (match), you have to give Woodstock credit. They played hard and fought 'til the end and made a game of things. We had match point on them, but they nearly came back."
Tori Forrest paced North Cobb on the night with 21 kills and 11 digs. Ashley Neff had 11 kills and two digs, while Kristin Miller totaled 12 kills and seven digs. Lauren Schmitz dished out 40 assists and had five digs and two kills.
"Tori really hit the ball well (Thursday) and our middles did a great job of blocking and keeping the plays alive," Auld said. "Ashley was solid for us and Kristin just injected life into the game. She was there for us at key moments."
North Cobb led Sequoyah from the beginning of the first game. Ahead 14-9, the Lady Chiefs rallied to cut the Lady Warriors' lead to 16-15 before Forrest fueled North Cobb's offense to a run of six of the next seven points. That staked the Lady Warriors to a 22-16 advantage en route to the first-game victory.
Sequoyah established itself in the second game, staking an 8-5 lead, but the Lady Warriors recovered to tie the contest at 10-all after a Sequoyah attack error. North Cobb eventually took a 12-11 lead it never relinquished. The margin grew to 20-14 after another Sequoyah attack error and the Lady Warriors held off a late rally.
Woodstock played North Cobb tough through the first 21 points of the first game and trailed by only one, 11-10, midway through the contest. But North Cobb went on an 11-0 run, catapulted by Woodstock attack errors and kills from Kristin Miller and Katie O'Rourke, to stake a 21-10 advantage before closing out the set.
North Cobb started the second set on a tear, taking an early 11-3 lead. Behind the service game of Erica Cox, the Lady Wolverines battled back and trailed 12-11 midway through the set and would take a 14-13 lead on Cox's kill.
The Lady Wolverines increased their lead to 19-15 on a North Cobb service error, but Neff and Forrest assisted in the Lady Warriors' comeback to tie things at 20-all. A kill from Forrest, service ace from Neff, kill from O'Rourke and a Woodstock attack error made the score 24-20 before North Cobb settled for the second-game win.
"I thought we played both teams really tough," Woodstock coach Karen Baker said. "They're both ranked teams and our kids played their hearts out. We can only get better playing games like this against tough, quality opponents."
