WOODSTOCK - A couple of runs in the fourth inning was all Lassiter needed as the Lady Trojans beat Woodstock, 2-0, in a non-region game Wednesday.

A two-run single by Annie Soltis provided Lassiter with its margin of victory in a game dominated by pitching and defense.

"Our defense and pitching held on throughout the game," Lassiter coach Scott Kelly said. "We got a couple of big hits in the fourth and that was enough for us."

Lassiter (6-2) got a strong pitching performance from Brooke Butler, who threw a three-hit shutout to lead the way for the Lady Trojans.

After Linsey Ramakellwan led off the bottom of the first for Woodstock with a double, the Lady Wolverines didn't get another hit until the sixth inning.

"We haven't been hitting the ball well," Woodstock coach Kortney Dempsey said. "We've got to produce more runs. We're getting better, but we still have some work to do."

Woodstock pitcher Mattie Dotson kept Lassiter in check early in the game, allowing only one hit in the first three innings.

Lassiter broke through in the top of the fourth inning as Rachael Orlandella was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning. Hilary Lynch walked, Brandi Donaldson singled to load the bases and Soltis singled to score Orlandella and Lynch, giving the Lady Trojans a 2-0 lead they held the rest of the way.

Dotson settled down and allowed Lassiter only one hit in the final three innings of the game.

In the bottom of the sixth, Butler struck out Alexis Merendo and Alex Wisted to begin the inning, but it appeared Woodstock was beginning to rally as Dotson singled and Kathryn Jackson walked to put runners on first and second.

The Lady Wolverines' hopes were dashed, however, when Kaitlyn Jackson grounded to Lassiter shortstop Morgan Fite, who tossed the ball to second baseman Jordan Adams to force out courtesy runner Lauren Perhson and end the inning.

Haley McCoy led off the bottom of the seventh with a double to put a runner in scoring position for Woodstock (4-4), but Butler proceeded to force Andrea Fernandez and Alyssa Merendo to fly out and Ramakellwan to ground out to finish the game and secure the win for Lassiter.

It was the third win in a row for Lassiter (6-2), each of which has come by shutout. The Lady Trojans will play at Alpharetta today at 5:55 p.m.
