DEAR EDITOR:The continuing adventures of the Cobb School Board make it obvious that the board members forgot why they are there.
They ran for the board because they wanted the best for our students. If they saw that as a stepping stone for higher office, then they are sadly mistaken.
There are only a few times where there should be any executive meetings. Those are to get up to date on actual or contemplated litigation and disciplinary personnel actions.
When they made other decisions during executive sessions, then we must believe that they were embarrassed and ashamed by your actions. If not, then they would have insisted that their actions and their votes be shouted to the public, so that we would have a chance to show our appreciation.
I was amazed at the strong statements by board Chairman Dr. John Abraham, when he blamed school attorney Glenn Brock for all of the executive sessions. It would appear that the school board would have to choose between the two, immediately, and fire Brock or force Abraham to step down as chairman. Maybe, something else happened behind closed doors.
I, personally, did not expect Dr. Abraham to have the legal knowledge of an attorney. However, I did expect him to learn and to understand the rules that the board must go by before accepting the position of chairman. For example, I do not expect him to read the state highway code, but I do expect that he can obey the traffic laws when he drives a car.
I also would recommend that Jay Dillon, the communications man for Fred Sanderson, be reassigned and someone put in that post who has some public relations experience. That would help him to sell his programs in a positive manner, instead of angering everyone by trying to sneak in surprises.
Finally, I believe that the board should learn to consult with our attorneys before making inappropriate decisions. A good attorney will not tell you that you cannot take the necessary actions, but will tell you the best way to accomplish it. This will allow us to avoid litigation, or to be assured that we will win anything that comes along.
