If the senior had any trouble making adjustments to her new position, her offensive statistics didn't show it Tuesday. She finished with 12 kills, three digs and two aces as the Lady Mustangs swept Walker (25-19, 25-21) in a non-area match at Kennesaw Mountain.
"Her concept is whatever she needs to do for the benefit of the team," Kennesaw Mountain coach Tonya Kern-Honea said. "She's really helping us at that position."
Having just three returning players from last year's team prompted the change for the Lady Mustangs. With seven untested newcomers on varsity this season, they are still seeking the right combinations.
Sophomore Kayla Weller was the primary setter against Walker, coming away with 17 assists. Kennesaw Mountain also had six aces, with McGrew, Weller and Jenna Dreyer each serving a pair.
"Our defense will do nothing but get better," Kern-Honea said. "We don't have a lot of size, just a bunch of little athletes with good reaction skills. If we continue to play well on defense, we're going to give teams trouble."
Two late service runs by Kennesaw Mountain in both games was the difference in the match, and the Lady Mustangs had to come from behind to claim the second game and the match.
A kill by Rachel Carr gave the Lady Wolverines a 13-11 lead in Game 2 before Kennesaw Mountain embarked on a four-point service run to jump ahead, 15-13. Kennesaw Mountain's lead eventually grew to four points, 21-17, after Katelyn Weinbarg hit a smash to end a long point.
Walker never got within two points for the rest of the match. An Dreyer ace gave Kennesaw Mountain a four-point lead at 23-19 before it clinched the match soon after.
The first game opened with four lead changes after both teams went on long service runs.
The Lady Mustangs took the lead for good on a four-point service run by Weller. A four-point run by Dreyer opened a 16-10 Kennesaw Mountain advantage, and the Lady Wolverines never recovered.
After Walker's Sarah Kelly served an ace in the second game to make it 8-all, it looked as if the Lady Wolverines were going to take control. Another Kelly ace gave them the lead before kills by Morgan Patterson and Brianna Reid put them ahead by three points.
"I don't think we played poorly in any phases of the game, but our blocking needs to get better," Walker coach Dan Clotfelter said. "We had issues at the net in the second game and couldn't close the gap."
? Kennesaw Mountain 2, Cartersville 0: The Lady Mustangs completed a spotless night, overwhelming the Class AAA school with game scores of 25-12 and 25-18.
Sara Jungles led Kennesaw Mountain (6-1) with four kills in the nightcap, while McGrew had three. Dreyer joined Kathryn Rodenberger and Dior Wood as the keys on the defensive side of the ball.
The Lady Mustangs will continue the non-area stretch of their schedule Tuesday in a tri-match at Chattahoochee that also includes North Cobb Christian.
