SAVANNAH, Ga. (AP) — Health officials in the Savannah area are considering changes in rules that govern tattoo and body piercing establishments.

Chatham County Board of Health officials say they want to make sure that body art artists are using approved tattoo ink, especially ones that do not contain lead, and are following safe hygiene practices.

The proposed changes include adding manufacturer recommendations for approved tattoo pigments, improving enforcement practices and requiring bathrooms and sinks, The Savannah Morning News reported.

Sixty artists are permitted to work at the 19 tattoo and body piercing studios in the county.

Drafts of the proposed changes were sent to tattoo and body piercing artists for input, said Todd Jones, the county's environmental health director. He said the responses so far have been positive.

"It's not a large revamp, but it plugs some holes that we might have," Jones told board members during an Aug. 13 meeting.

The health department said feedback from the tattoo and body piercing industries will be gathered until Friday. Following a review of the comments, a formal version of the updated rules and regulations will be offered for public comment.

After the public comment period, board members are expected to vote on the changes.
