Joseph Richard Bennett was arrested by Atlanta police at the Omni Hotel in Atlanta on Sunday at 2:30 a.m. on charges of aggravated battery and battery.
Bennett, 50, of Lilburn, has not been released from the Fulton County jail.
Cobb Fire Chief Randy Crider said he was made aware of Bennett’s arrest this weekend.
“He has been placed on unpaid administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation,” Crider said.
Atlanta police say Bennett’s wife sustained a broken nose and bruises to her face, arms and wrists after a dispute with her husband this weekend.
Bennett’s wife told police she left the room she was sharing with her husband to visit a friend’s room Saturday night. She said when she returned her husband “began to accuse her of being gone too long,” according to the report.
Bennett allegedly threw his wife to the floor and took the back of her head “and threw her to the ground once again … causing lacerations to her lips, a swollen left eye, bruises and abrasions to the right side of her face as well as both of her knees and on the inside of both of her wrists,” the Atlanta police report states.
Bennett’s wife told police this was not the first time her husband had physically abused her and she showed officers old bruises from previous fights with her husband, according to the report.
At the scene, Bennett’s wife told police she is legally blind and “was unable to physically write her statement.”
Bennett’s wife was taken to Grady Memorial Hospital in Atlanta to have her injuries treated.
Bennett’s next court date is Sept. 8 at the Fulton County Courthouse in Atlanta, Flanagan said.
