The Atlanta Lyric Theatre opened its 35th season with the Tony Award winning musical “Cats.” The production runs through Aug. 24 at the Jennie T. Anderson Theatre at the Cobb Civic Center.

“As the metro area’s only musical theater company, and Cobb County’s only professional theater, The Lyric’s selection of shows was crafted to appeal to all audiences and all tastes. There’s something for everyone,” said Managing Artistic Director Brandt Blocker.

The anniversary season features a full spectrum of “tried and true” musicals such as “Cats,” “Chicago,” and “Damn Yankees,” to a regional premiere of “Catch Me If You Can,” to a long lost classic “Barnum.” The season also includes two holiday shows: “Sanders Family Christmas” now in its 16th year featuring the original Theatre in the Square cast at First United Methodist Church of Marietta, and “Sleigh Bells Swing,” a big-band holiday showcase for the entire family at the Cobb Energy Performing Arts Center.

“We are featuring two new musicals never before seen in our area — ‘Catch Me If You Can’ and ‘Sleigh Bells Swing.’ Also, ‘Barnum,’ originally seen on Broadway with Jim Dale and Glenn Close, hasn’t been produced in the metro area for many years due to its unique requirements featuring jugglers, trapeze artists and other circus acts,” Blocker said.

“‘Cats’ is a metro-area favorite. The show opened to the largest crowds in The Lyric’s 35-year history, proving that young and old alike love this Andrew Lloyd Webber classic. Many patrons experienced ‘Cats’ as a child and now they are sharing that experience with their own children,” the east Cobb resident said.
