DEAR EDITOR:

This has been an interesting week for the Marietta City Council. One member is accused of “using his power as a public figure to get favors from the city government ...” The entire Council uses the services of a “secret appraiser,” who has not been named, to apparently undervalue the long-held property of a great-grandmother by almost $30,000. Then, in the latest sordid turn of events, a councilman is indicted under RICO statutes.

Is it asking too much that we expect our elected officials to be held to a higher standard? Should they not be like Caesar’s wife, i.e. beyond reproach? Perhaps it is our fault by allowing council members to run unopposed and blindly re-electing them with no analysis of their character and intent.

Benjamin Franklin said that in a democracy, we get the government we deserve. I wonder what old Ben would say about our City Council!
