PHENIX CITY, Ala. (AP) — Authorities say the cousin of a woman whose body was found in southeast Alabama has been identified as a suspect in her death.

Russell County Sheriff Heath Taylor said during a press conference Monday that an adult cousin who was with 19-year-old Keonte Chavis of Phenix City before she was found dead has been apprehended in New York. It's unclear whether charges have been filed against the man yet.

The woman's remains were found late Saturday in a wooded area near Seale. Police had been searching for her since Thursday, when she was last seen in Phenix City.

Taylor says the woman appears to have been strangled. The sheriff says investigators have determined a potential motive, but won't disclose further details until the man is returned to Russell County.
