Cobb's September foreclosures see about 5 percent rise

MARIETTA — The number of Cobb properties scheduled for auction rose slightly over the past month, but it is still noticeably lower than what was advertised a year ago.

Two hundred seventy-seven homes have been placed in the legal notices of the MDJ. If the notices appear for four consecutive weeks, the properties will be sold at the September auction on the Cobb courthouse steps in Marietta. Foreclosure sales begin at 10 a.m. on the first Tuesday of each month.

September’s number is about a 5 percent increase over the 265 homes advertised for August’s sale.

It’s also a 42 percent drop from the 475 homes listed for foreclosure in September 2013.

Year-to-date, the county has seen 50 percent fewer homes up for foreclosure than it did last year. From February to September, 2,348 homes have been advertised. For the same period in 2013, that number was 4,732.

Cobb foreclosures haven’t exceeded 300 since March, and have remained close to the 275 level since June.

According to the website RealtyTrac.com, 1 in every 1,496 Cobb homes is foreclosed upon, with Kennesaw seeing the fewest and Austell getting hit with the most.

The website shows Cobb’s foreclosure rate is lower than the state’s, with 1 in every 1,296 homes hitting the auction block.

Cobb’s rate is also better than the national average, which the website shows as 1 in every 1,228.
