MARIETTA — An ad filling up a quarter of a page of Friday’s Atlanta Journal-Constitution promises a story coming Sunday about a secret deal between Cobb Board of Commissioners Chairman Tim Lee and a corporate attorney — a charge Lee refutes.

“The essence of the story is going to be that I worked with Dan McRae, who is the attorney for the Cobb County Development Authority. I worked with him at no cost to the county to help figure out what financial opportunities were available to the county as far as the Braves deal.”

Lee said McRae is “renowned” for his expertise on financing bonds, so in July 2013, he asked McRae to help him with the Braves deal. When the deal was officially announced in November, the county

government’s staff took over, Lee said, and he had no further involvement with McRae.

However, according to a pay invoice dated February 19, 2014, obtained by the MDJ, McRae was eventually contracted to work with the county on issues related to the stadium deal, such as “revenue sources and legal structure for hotel/motel fees and Special Cumberland millage” on December 12, 2013, and “drafting documentation for revenue sources” on December 4, 2013. The fees on the invoice total more than $7,000 for work performed from November 22, 2013, to December 27, 2013.

Lee said the choice to hire an outside attorney is within the purview of the county’s attorney, Deborah Dance, and he had no involvement in McRae receiving funds to work on the deal. There is no connection between McRae’s hiring and his earlier work in July, Lee added.

“It’s two different word problems that shouldn’t be added together. I worked with him up to a certain point to help get the finances flushed out to see if it was even a feasible project. Once we determined it was a feasible project, I turned it over to my staff to execute,” he said.

Commissioner Bob Ott, who represents the area where the stadium will be built, said he has no knowledge of the work McRae did in July. Still, he said there is a perception there could have been a “quid pro quo.”

“I guess the only thing I would say is that there (are) county policies and procedures as to how contracts are given or people are paid,” Ott said. “And I would be concerned if they weren’t followed.”

Waiting on the MDJ to comment on the article from yesterdays AJC spilling the beans on Tim Lee's antics. Why are you not doing your civic duty to report these things?

Or, It's like me and my uncle the plumber plotting to illegally route $4 million of tax payer's money and do an illegal end around the County Attorney and 4 duly elected Commissioners.

Move along Braves fans. Nothing to see here!

After reading the AJC articles, it has become obvious that the MDJ - when comes to Braves related stories - plays the role of cheerleader and not journalist. Shame on you, editors.

Shady Shady Shady! More reason the SPLOST will never pass, because this back door Braves deal ruined what little trust there was in Govt. Therefore they can tell all the cops, hey we tried to help. However the citizens didn't want it so blame them. Meanwhile all of our good cops continue to leave and go where they are really appreciated. Timmy and the gang don't care about Public Safety!

Nice to know the MDJ is being used by Timmy to try and cushion the impact of the upcoming AJC story, trying to get out ahead of it with his own sketchy explanation.

Hey MDJ, are you guys suckers now or what?

I did not see the article in the AJC this morning.

Did the AJC pull it?

"Move along, Braves fans. Nothing to see here."

Tim Lee is the new Baghdad Bob. Whenever anything inappropriate is discovered or discussed, he is there to tell us nothing is wrong. He makes sarcastic remarks and gestures when people are commenting or questioning him at Commission meetings and town halls.

He was wrong about the Medical Examiner. Wrong when he tried to sneak the BRT in the SPLOST. He is wrong about his unfunded solution to the CCPD retention problem.

Funny that Tim is on the defensive already in preparation for the AJC article to hit the fan tomorrow. He obviously is using the MDJ to help him put his spin on things. Never trusted this man, never will. Bob Ott is being kind in his statements, but if all find that this deal was done so illegally, ALL the commissioners, except Cupid should be replaced.

On Nov 23, Lee stated to the MDJ that "we" had McRae "working on this" and had already concluded the deal was bulletproof. But according to public records McRae started working for the county on Nov 22, meaning he would have had to do this on one day - Friday, Nov 22.

I simply do not trust Tim Lee. He seems to lie about things that can be disproven, and attack and belittle those that disagree with him. I want the Braves to be in Cobb County. But, I also want an honest, open Chairman, not Tim Lee.

Did he just throw the County Attorney under his Braves Party Bus?
