Wauriga “Shorty” Simmons, 95, passed away peacefully at home on Friday, August 1,2014 surrounded by her husband, family and close friends. Affectionatley refered to as the 1st Lady of the Cobb County Marietta Water Authority, Shorty was pre-deceased by husband Cal Simmons who retired as their General Manager. They were married for 62 years. In retirement, they enjoyed travel to all 48 contigious states with numerous friends and family. Born in Union County GA, Shorty was a life long resident. As a faithful follower of her Heavenly Father, she served as a deacon’s wife Sunday school Teacher, and volunteer at Kennestone Hospital for many, many years. She is Survived by her husband, Sandy Helton, Dallas ,GA; sons Robert Wilcoxon, Grand Junction CO, Jerry Wilcoxon, Saint Simons Island, GA; brother, Rev. Sam Caldwell; sisters Florence Dean and Earlene Phillips; Grandchildren, Robbi Wilcoxon Nelson, Denver, CO, Jay Wilcoxon, Acworth, GA, Mari Richardson, Grand Junction, CO, Elizabeth Wilcoxon Selman, Tampa, FL, Wendy Wilcoxon Stewart, Charleston, SC, Caroline Wilcoxon, Saint Simons Island, GA; 11 Great Grandchildren and 5 Great Great Grandchildren. A service to celebrate the life of Shorty Simmons will be on Tuesday, Aug 5, 2014 at 1:00 at The Piney Grove Baptist Church in Acworth, GA, where she will lie in state at 11:00 Am until service time. Rev. Scotty Davis and Rev. Bob Wardlaw will officiate. Interment will follow in Green Lawn Cemetery at 4:00 PM. The family will receive friends Monday from 5:00 until 8:00 Pm at Roswell Funeral Home. Roswell Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
