‘Zillionaire’ sees pitchforks if ‘glaring inequalities’ aren’t fixed

After he was elected president in 1992, Bill Clinton presided over eight years of peace and prosperity.

Business boomed, the markets surged, welfare was reformed and America’s middle class grew and prospered.

Clinton’s progressive policies undeniably succeeded.

We then saw eight years of the exact opposite, topped off by a devastating economic calamity.

George W. Bush’s conservative policies undeniably failed.

Americans elected another Democrat in 2008 who, during his five and a half years in office, pulled America out of the tail spin.

Today’s numbers don’t lie:

• 288,000 jobs added in June, the 52nd straight month of jobs growth;

• 1.4 million jobs added in the first half of 2014 are the most since 1999 (under Clinton);

• The Dow reached 17,000 for the first time last week; and

• Unemployment fell to 6.1 percent in June.

Barack Obama engineered all this with absolutely no help from House Republicans, including Representatives Phil Gingrey, Tom Price and Jack Kingston.

Since 2010, the GOP has refused to cooperate with the president or pass any legislation to ensure the rebounding economy benefits every American. They won’t even raise the minimum wage.

So while the wealthiest Americans get wealthier, the middle class is shrinking and the ranks of the poor swell.

The consequences are ominous, says Nick Hanauer in a Politico Magazine “memo” to “My Fellow Zillionaires.”

Hanauer calls himself a “proud and unapologetic capitalist” writing, “What sets me apart is … an intuition about what will happen in the future. Seeing where things are headed is the essence of entrepreneurship. And what do I see in our future now? I see pitchforks. ...”

“At the same time that people like you and me are thriving beyond the dreams of any plutocrats in history, the rest of the country — the 99.99 percent — is lagging far behind. The divide between the haves and have-nots is getting worse really, really fast.”

Hanauer explains that in 1980, the wealthiest 1 percent controlled about 8 percent of America’s national income. The bottom 50 percent, he notes, shared about 18 percent.

Just 34 years later, the top 1 percent share about 20 percent and the bottom 50 percent, 12 percent.

“The problem is that inequality is at historically high levels and getting worse every day,” the billionaire continues. “Our country is rapidly becoming less a capitalist society and more a feudal society. Unless our policies change dramatically, the middle class will disappear, and we will be back to late 18th-century France. Before the revolution.”

Critics would do well to consider that Hanauer saw the Internet coming long before most everyone else. He was an early investor in Amazon and sold his aQuantive online advertising company to Microsoft for $6.4 billion in cash.

“If we don’t do something to fix the glaring inequities in this economy, the pitchforks are going to come for us. No society can sustain this kind of rising inequality … You show me a highly unequal society, and I will show you a police state. Or an uprising. There are no counterexamples. None. It’s not if, it’s when.”

Hanauer agrees with Obama, writing real economic growth comes from the middle out, not from the top down. With a thriving middle class, the wealthy do well, the poor better.

Yet, middle class communities like Cobb County, where the median household income is $65,000, continue to struggle with stagnant incomes.

Cobb County voters are also overwhelmingly conservative, inexplicably electing the very people hurting their pocketbooks.

They do so for all the wrong reasons, mistakenly believing Democratic policies are hurting the country when the aforementioned economic data emphatically speaks for itself.

Having done zero to aid the recovery, Republican candidates are now frantically trying to divert voter attention away from this Democratic-driven success story with bogus scandals.

That’s all they have left, folks.

Did I make that up all by myself? Well, that all...Depends. Actually, reading any one of your diatribes sparks my heartfelt responses, so I suppose I have to give you all the credit (or, in your case, do you prefer 'The Glory?') No, I'm not entirely original, but listening to and talking to (more listening) I get the distinct impression that I just might be more in line with the silent majority than the ever-vocal minority, hence my 'biased' comments. Based on the last couple rebuttal articles (Mssrs. Joy & Nash - professionals!) I think you may have awakened a sleeping giant to your rants. I rather cherish being a conservative; I don't have to keep changing my story. And you can invite my hatred, but you'll never get it - I have none to give. Aggravation and exasperation, yes, but hatred, no. (ps - for the record I'm too young for Depends, but I'll accept your personal recommendation that they are a good product, if I live long enough to need them. :-) Love and cheers, Good Buddy!

Why, Roly-Poly Foley... I am deeply saddened and hurt by your announcement to your readers that I am an ugly troll! I always had a higher opinion of myself. Me thinks the dictionary lookup of 'ugly troll' is likely accompanied by your editorial mugshot, but I digress. Gremlins like you, Mike H and other bedwetting, liberal pencil jockies are the defining reasons of what is wrong with America and why it will never, ever return to its former glory. Take everything good, decent and righteous about the country and toss it overboard, berate anyone who would dare try to preserve those ideals, and then label yourself "Democrat." (For the record, Republicans are not fairing much better these days.) Suggestion for you and all your flaccid, liberal comrades: go to townhall.com and lookup conservative vs. liberals. In theory, at least, we conservatives have higher ideals and ambitions for our nation, and not afraid to put them in writing. Democrat "ideals" are in constant flux, always bending to accomodate the latest societal fads and eager to replace personal responsibility with personal freedom as long as someone else pays the bill. Hopefully the pendulum begins to swing the other way as liberal thinking and actions are exposed for what they are: empty and meaningless.

Hey Maddox, did you make that up all by yourself or did your adult day care attendant help you with it after she changed your Depends?

You're the gift that keeps on giving, revealing the intellectual aptitude of the ugly conservative trolls who can't come up with an informed argument, so they rely on personal attacks that make them look like asses.

As I say, I invite your hatred.

I think you missed one. What is the labor participation rate and what has been the trend for, I dunno, the last decade?

A friend was talking about debt, GDP, and deficit. Neither of us could quote exact figures, so being Democrats we looked it up.

The last 3 years of the Carter administration show a budget surpluss. The last 3 years of the Clinton administration show a budget surpluss. The Obama administration had a bigger hole to dig out of and there was no Republican help, nevertheless, the debt has dropped more in the Obama 5 years than at any time since WW II.

Insults, ignorance, and anger are what some live on.

Facts, logic, and reason are why Democrats are Democrats.

Mike, the facts are clearly on our side and it drives them crazy.

As I say, all conservatives have left are lies, distortions and half-truths. And when you irrefutably show them that, you get ugly trolls like Maddox, CobbCoGuy, ECS (aka Mel Fein), and the rest coming out of the woodwork to call you names.

As FDR said, I welcome their hatred. It means I'm succeeding. They'll love my Ted Cruz take down Friday.

Thanks and keep reading.

"...you get ugly trolls like Maddox, CobbCoGuy, ECS..."

Yeee-haawwww! I made Mr. Foley's list. However, I'm hurt that my name wasn't listed first.

Who loves ya more than me, Mr. Foley? Who else gives you as much attention?

Mike H. Conservative use real facts. We don't create our own like the liberals. The ones you manufacture soon fall apart like most liberal lies.

The Carter and Clinton "suplusses" have been shown to be phony manipulations so many times I am surprised anybody has the nerve to bring them up. But then, that is the way of the liberal. Any old port in storm, eh?

KeFo, no wonder you remain a struggling small time "journalist," (an obvious overstretch of the description.) I know of no other writer who is as thin-skinned as you are, personally attacking by name anyone who might present a different angle than your 'fact' oriented offerings. As a fat, (poorly)aged white male yourself, you appear to have nothing in common with your readers, always attacking the very group you are a part of. Do you really think other demographic groups read your drivel?? Many can't speak our language, can't read above 8th grade level, have the attention span of a reality show and you've already aliented the rest. Melvin Fein is a smart, fine and deep-thinking gentleman - your polar opposite. You can't match him for wit - you have only hatred and anger on your side. Write something honest, and upbeat, and you might get some readers. However, this aged white male reads you every Friday - your "editorials" help me stay focused on why we have a mental-case President, the idiots who elected him, and why our country is in such crappy shape. Kevin, you really said Clinton presided over 8 years of peace and prosperity?

How do you classify the illegal invasion of Kosovoa and Monica Lewinsky? Peace or prosperity?

How do you classify impeachment for perjury? Peace or Prosperity?

How do you classify the White Water probe? Peace or prosperity?

You really need to read a book on occasion. You'd be surpised what one can learn by reading instead of getting all one's knowledge from MSNBC and the liberal nincompoop's daily.

@ why not - Sir, are you one of those fools who try to blame Bush for 9-11? If so, then you are to be pitied.

July 15, 2014
@ Rhett - not surprised at your ignorance:

On Aug. 6, 2001, President George W. Bush received a classified review of the threats posed by Osama bin Laden and his terrorist network, Al Qaeda. That morning’s “presidential daily brief” — the top-secret document prepared by America’s intelligence agencies — featured the now-infamous heading: “Bin Laden Determined to Strike in U.S.” A few weeks later, on 9/11, Al Qaeda accomplished that goal.

July 15, 2014
@ anonymous, ( probably Foley). And from the big surprise announcement "bin Laden is planning to strike somewhere in this country." Bush was supposed to know that 36 days later they would hijack two planes and fly them into the World Trade Center.

Mind telling me which mind reader he was supposed to consult to find this out?

Your claim that because of that vague piece of intelligence, Buhs is to blame for 9/11 really borders on insanity.

The WTC bombing had been in the palnnign stages for a minimum of two years How come Clinton didn't know about it?

You are totally ridiculous.

Hey there, Foley, disguised as "anonymous". Is this the same intellignece community that had been preaching for 4 years that Sadam Hussein had weapons of mass destruction?

So, you wanna fault Bush for listening to them on that intelligence and then "ignoring" them on the 9/11 "guess where and when" bombshell?

Pretty convenient logic.

July 16, 2014
@Rhett Writer- "BIN LADEN DETERMINED TO STRIKE IN US" was the Presidents Daily Brief prepared by the CIA and given to President George W. Bush on Monday Aug 6, 2001. The brief warned of terrorism threats from Osama Bin Laden and Al Queda 36 days before the 9-11 attacks while Bush was on vacation in Crawford, Texas. You apparently believe a President is responsible for what happens on his watch only when he is a Democrat!
Rhett Writer

July 17, 2014
at Why Not. So, it is your contention that, from the words "BIN LADEN DETERMINED TO STRIKE IN US", Bush was supposed to determine the date, the time, the target(s) along with the means and the methods.

Are you daft? Do you really believe anyone could have foreseen that, based on the intelligence report you quoted? If so, then you really do belong in a rubber room, or else writing rules for the "Liberal Playbook of Stupid Statements."

No, a President should be held responsible for those things that happen on his watch, when he sits in a "situation room" watching it happen and listening to the pleas for help from 4 Americans being murdered, and then leaves to go on a campaign tour, without doing anything about it.

Think only the border states are impacted?

http://bostonherald.com/news_opinion/local_coverage/2014/07/illegal_immigrants_flown_to_bay_state

A standard conservative line is that the administration is acquiring new voters. However, as the issue spreads to other non-border states, could it possibly backfire by changing the opinion of those who voted for this travesty in 2012?

Mr. Foley just gave Mr. Obama a big ol' smiley face sticker. However, can someone help me reconcile this happy talk with the following?

Per Real Clear Politics averages today, the Job Approval spread is 13.5 to Disapproval.

On July 9 The Economist/YouGov Direction of Country spread was 32 Wrong Track. Actually, if you look at the absolute numbers - Right Direction 28, Wrong Track 60 - it's 2 to 1.

There's also the recent Quinnipiac poll that found Mr. Obama to be the worst president since WWII.

I dunno, Mr. Foley; I guess your smiley face and selective facts are enough to dupe your low info fan base, but not CobbCoGuy!

PHONY FOLEY AND FALSE FACTS ARE AT IT AGAIN:

6.1% unemployment, the real number is 12.1%. Foley as usual omits what he doesn't want to admit, that millions have dropped out of the workforce frustrated that jobs are not available.

1.4 million jobs added, two facts Foley doesn't want you to know, first that the economy is still almost one million jobs short of where it was when Obama was elected and secondly the majority of the jobs he touts are either part-time or low paying full time jobs.

He doesn't want to let you know that when Obama took office there were 32 million Food Stamp recipients, today there are 47 million receiving Food Stamps.

Foley spouts that the stock market has reached a record high of 17000, but he conveniently omits the fact that the Obama minions at the Federal Reserve are printing and pumping billions of worthless dollars into the market to keep it from collapsing.

And is so typical of an unabashed Ultra Liberal Obama apologist, Foley fails to mention that his "Savior in Chief" has more than doubled the National Debt to close to 18 trillion dollars. And, that MOST of Obama's debt doubling was squandered and wasted on grants to his political donors, many of which went Bankrupt, so-called "Shovel Ready Jobs" that didn't exist, "Cash for Clunkers", that turned out to be a joke, and the most expansive increase in the Welfare State since Lyndon Johnson's "Great Society failed folly.

The inequality Hanauer refers to is the direct result of the failed domestic and economic policies of Obama and his administration. Stagnant incomes, dismal economic growth and REAL unemployment numbers can be laid squarely at the feet of Barak Obama and his indefensible ineptitude. Total incompetence, feckless attention to governance, lack of accountability, oppressive regulation and failed foreign policy has placed Obama in the category of one of the worse and most divisive Presidents since WWII. The American people of tired of his 5 year blame game tactic and failure to take responsibility for anything. Hopefully, November will change the dynamic and the Congress under Republican Leadership and control will force Obama to grow up and stop his juvenile antics of blaming everything on somebody else up to and including "the dog ate my briefing papers, so I found out about it in press", his silver tongue spin shenanigans to crisis and scandal, and total denial of reality.

Foley the Ultra Liberal nincompoop just doesn't know when to quit trying to defend the indefensible.

East Cobb Senior (who sounds an awful like Mel Fein) I cite numbers accepted by government officials from both parties.

I recall clearly during Fein's debate with Dr. White he dismissed without substantiation the factual numbers presented by Dr. White as "garbage in, garbage out," a phrase ECS has used. I also think "nincompoop" is the sort of word Fein would use when angry and frustrated by well researched and well written opinions that differ with his own.

If ECS is Doc Fein, don't be afraid to debate me openly, sir. In fact, why don't you sign me up for the next "Marketplace of Ideas"? I've seen you in action and I won't be as polite as Dr. White was in the face of your boorish, ill informed behavior.

The Republican model for governance, congressional leaders swear, from day one, to obstruct, block and filibuster "everything" in hopes an uninformed American people will blame the president for the disaster and return them to power! So much for their concern for the American people. The do-nothings can then return to doing what they do best, giving tax cuts to the wealthy, race baiting and cutting regulations on corporations.

Foley, I don't know how many times you need to be told, and get it though that thick Neanderthal brain of yours that I am not Dr. Fein. Mel is perfectly capable of responding to your liberal gibberish, half-truths and skewed facts on his own. The good book says that there are none so blind as those who will not see. You have been so blinded by your own prejudice and hate for Republicans and Conservatives you wouldn't know the truth when it kicked you squarely in the teeth.

You endlessly regurgitate the spin and vomit of Democrat talking points and it is clearly obvious that you are incapable of an independent thought. The only reasonable explanation for the MDJ to continue to print your column is the stimulating and accurate responses they generate. Hopefully someday they will find a liberal that at least can develop a column that presents actual facts to validate their arguments and not the lies, hyperbole, character assassination and spin that permeate almost every column you write.

Kev, thanks for bringing up one of my personal heroes, Bill Clinton. What a wonderful President he was. He did such wonderful things during his two terms as President. Too numerous to go into now.

However, he did it seems have a selfish streak evidenced by the fact that he didn't share Monica Lewinsky's phone number with the rest of his administrations minions.

Comrade Kevin you are so correct as usual. Our course of action now is so durn obvious. That pesky 22nd Amendment to the Constitution (you know that outdated document those old white males who were slave owners inflicted on us years ago)should be repealed so the glorious Obama/Biden dynameic duo can be in office for LIFE!

The peace, prosperity and perpetual springtime for America we are presently experiencing under the people's glorious Obama/Biden/Holder junta will be our reward.
