The 14-year-old victim was walking with a friend across the East-West Connector Wednesday when the two stopped on the concrete median separating the north and southbound lanes, investigators say.
According to police, one of the teens stepped into the left travel lane and into the path of an oncoming 2005 Jeep Cherokee.
The victim was not in a crosswalk and did not have the right of way, police say, when the Jeep struck him.
Karmen Edmond, 46, of Smyrna, was identified as the driver and will not face charges in the incident, police say.
Investigators say the teen was pronounced dead from his injuries at Scottish Rite Friday.
