SMYRNA — For the second time in three days, a group of veterans led by retired U.S. Army Col. Larry Mrozinski met in downtown Smyrna to call Barry Loudermilk’s military record into question.

Mrozinski was joined by east Cobb’s Bill Stanley and Canton resident Scott McElroy, as the group went into detail about a record they say the candidate has exaggerated in speeches and forums.

“He has clearly stated things about himself that he is not,” Mrozinski said. “We are very disappointed.”

Loudermilk, a former state senator from Bartow County, faces former U.S. Rep. Bob Barr of Smyrna in the July 22 Republican runoff for the 11th Congressional District. The district encompasses a large piece of Cobb County, a slice of Fulton County and all of Cherokee and Bartow counties. Because no Democrat has entered the race, the winner is expected to fill the seat for the next two years.

Statements from Loudermilk during forums include, “I’ll commit to you as someone who knows the importance of national defense. I’ve lived in that arena. I worked in that arena, and as an aviator — as a pilot — I know the value and the importance that our aerospace and our airpower has,” according to Stanley.

Loudermilk has also recalled class discussions about “aerospace engineering and flight physics” during his time in the Air Force.

Though Loudermilk has a pilot’s license today, Mrozinski and Stanley have said his statements strongly imply he was a pilot in the military. But, according to the group, Loudermilk was never a pilot in the Air Force. They also say his service records offer no indication Loudermilk ever enrolled in classes about aerospace engineering and flight physics.

The forms released by Loudermilk state he was a communications and computer specialist during his eight years of military service.

Along with the veterans, Barr’s campaign manager Jeff Breedlove attended both news conferences.

Barr told the MDJ he isn’t behind the veterans’ message and downplayed campaign manager Jeff Breedlove’s presence.

“It was a public event,” Barr said. “Whenever we have an event, Barry has somebody there, and that’s fine.”

He added Mrozinski informed him of his intentions, but insists that was the full extent of his involvement in the news event.

Dan McLagan, spokesman for Loudermilk, said the accusations are an ineffective smear campaign.

“They’re drowning in a pool of their own blood,” McLagan said. “They’re getting slaughtered online. It’s brutal. They try to make an accusation when there’s no accusation. We released all the stuff they wanted.”

He said Barr is clearly behind the effort.

“Barr’s campaign manager was there (at the news conferences). Jeff Breedlove was there, a consultant. He was the one orchestrating it,” McLagan said. “(Barr spokesman) Derek Barr was on the radio talking about it. … They try to say it wasn’t them. It’s pretty clear that it was.”

Loudermilk has released a resume of his service and also a form DD 214, which shows his honorable release from military service.

Mrozinski said the release form and resume don’t always match up with the same type of inconsistencies they claim are in Loudermilk’s forum statements.

“This shows a clear pattern of embellishment,” Mrozinski said.

Stanley, an east Cobb resident, wrote a letter to the editor published in the June 20 MDJ outlining his problems with Loudermilk’s statements. He says he’s a Barr supporter but was not asked to write the piece by Barr.

Barr took 26 percent of the statewide vote during the May 20 primary, while Loudermilk took 37 percent. Four other candidates, including Mrozinski, were knocked out of the race that night.

Loudermilk, through his spokesman Dan McLagan, fired back against the accusations.

“Where is Bob Barr’s discharge form?” McLagan said. “It’s sad Bob, who never served in uniform, is attacking Barry’s 20 years of military service.”

MDJ article.

We've gone from 8-20 on the lips of his campaign manager.

Err, Mr Veal, it is not a "discharge form." I think what you are trying to talk about is called a DD214, but since you never served in the military, we will give you a pass.

Barr has never claimed he served in the military, so why are you demanding to see proof of his service? You are tossing out a red herring.

At issue is Loundermilk's embelishment of his military record.

Also, you need to get your facts correct. Per Loundermilk's DD214, he did not serve 20 years active duty.

So Bob, want to give it another try?

It is sad that this article misses the entire stated reason for the press conference on Tuesday and the follow-up on Thursday, for Mr. Loudermilk to submit a certified copy of the for DD 214. The submitted documentation lacks job identifier descriptors and is an INCOMPLETE document. No matter how the supporters of Mr. Loudermilk yell and scream, he HAS NOT disclosed the information requested at all.

Was Barr in the military? If not, why not? He is of the age group when the draft was in effect.

Loudermilk served, did Barr? Bob be careful of stones that you or your surrogates throw at others.

Hey West Cobbian where have you been? Barr has made no claims of military service. Moreover, whether Barr served or not is of no consequence.

At issue is Loudermilk's embellishment of his military service.

The draft ended in late 1974 or early 1975. Registration was not required after that.

I find it disgusting how little men try to amp up their military record. I find this reason not to vote for Loudermilk.

I unfortunately married one of these fools that told stories of his military services. The little embellishments of military service lead to bigger.

I also had to forewarn my neighbor a lawyer of an even bigger scammer who was going around match.com claiming to be a retired officer who had been in two services. He also went from Gym to Gym. He got very mad when I started warning every woman he talked to he was a fake.

A military pilot is an officer, Loudermilk was enlisted. There is a big difference.

I saw a guy trying to claim veterans presence for engineering jobs, blocking real degreed engineers on certificates. He had only been in a Corp of engineer unit as a E-4. He had no college. Some stupid personal clerk believed his lies and blocked real engineers on a personnel certificate, with this phone. I had to get a Lt. Who was an engineer do a write up that he wasn't an engineer. Engineers like pilots are officers.

Mr. Mrozinski is a very dull blade.

Sharper blades discern exactly what Loudermilk has said.

Aside from your cliche and comments lacking any substance, please do share exactly what it is that Loudermilk has supposedly said?

I am shocked, disappointed and disgusted about the way the Republican candidates have viciously gone after each other. These attacks are doing nothing but empowering the democrats. According to some of the ads, the man running would be fit for nothing but prison! Stop it already!! You all have done enough damage to one another.

How are democrats being empowered? There is no viciousness here, just seeking the truth, the whole truth. If anything, this will empower the Republican party to have a strong honest representative from the 11th district. If there were any real democrat advantage, Kevin Foley would be in here casting his usual aspersions.

I t is conclusive that Loudermilk has my vote! He has produced his military papers, two sets, because one wasn't good enough. They keep attacking and Barr is behind this disgusting show of politics. He clearly stated in the forum that he is a pilot NOW. He has not mislead anyone. VOTE LOUDERMILK!

Wrong, sir. He did not make that distinction. Had he done so, there would be none of this backbiting going on.

Barry has not presented the requested documentation. There is NO military RESUME, there is no DD214 -4 which shows his separation and is the ONLY document the government would use to define VA benefits. Vote for who you will, but recognize you are not getting past the rhetoric to actual facts. If not then I've got some land to sell you in Florida, that has a waterfront view.
