The Cobb Police Department is investigating a death that occurred Sunday in the Chattahoochee River near Atlanta Road.

According to police spokesman Mike Bowman, Cobb Fire and EMS workers were sent to the area because of a report someone had not resurfaced from the water.

A release from the department said the victim, identified as 25-year-old Omar Fraire of Smyrna, believed a boy in his group was underwater and needed assistance. Fraire entered the water to assist, the release says, but for unknown reasons, he did not resurface himself. He was located under the water by fire and EMS workers.

Fraire was transported to Emory Adventist Hospital where he was pronounced dead. Anyone with information is asked to call (770) 499-3945.
