The death of a Marietta homicide victim shot in late May prompted police to upgrade a Smyrna suspect’s charges to murder Saturday.

Laronte Jamal Nelms, 22, was being held on charges of aggravated assault and battery before Trinity Hardnett, 35, died over the weekend at Kennestone Hospital as a result of injuries sustained during a May 21 altercation.

Police say witnesses alerted them to a public argument between Hardnett and multiple others at a Food Mart off Pat Mell Road.

The dispute continued across the street at the Edinborough Apartment complex, where investigators say Nelms shot Hardnett.

Nelms has remained in the county jail since he was arrested on May 27. He will now face a murder charge. The body has been turned over to Cobb’s medical examiner.
