The College of Continuing and Professional Education at Kennesaw State University recently announced it has developed a series of language courses designed specifically for the business or leisure traveler. Classes meet for two hours each week for five weeks and provide an ideal introduction to a language. Students learn travel-related dialogue, pronunciation, cultural observances and key phrases.

“It gives you survival language skills,” said Lyn Cohen, program manager. “We’ll cover the basics, like how to ask for directions, book a hotel or introduce yourself. Our instructors, who are all native speakers, will also share insight on the culture — things such as Chinese customs or the five-lane traffic circles in Spain. Understanding traditions, idioms and other aspects of life in a foreign country enrich the travel experience.”

Languages offered later this summer and fall include Italian, Spanish, Arabic, Chinese and Portuguese. Each course is only $129 and open to all adults.

The class schedule is Chinese for Business or Travel, Aug. 13 to Sept. 10; Italian for Tourists, Aug. 13 to Sept. 10; Introduction to Arabic, Sept. 6 to Oct. 4; Portuguese for Business and Travel, Sept. 13 to Oct. 11; and Introduction to Spanish, Oct. 8 to Nov. 5.

“The focus is on the spoken language,” Cohen said, “but we’ll also cover written words needed for road signs or restaurant menus. There’s no textbook required. Photos, classroom discussions and firsthand experiences from the instructor will truly bring the language to life.”

The first classes start Aug. 13. They are offered twice each year, once on a weeknight and once on Saturdays.
