Police have arrested a Powder Springs man accused of breaking into a carwash in the middle of the night and drilling into its safe.

Joey Lynn Hampton was taken into custody June 1 after police say they entered the Stars Car Wash off Austell Powder Springs Road and found the suspect exiting a room that contained coin machines.

According to his arrest warrant, Hampton entered the closed business after 1 a.m. carrying a pry bar and a bag of assorted tools after drilling out the car wash’s locks with a cordless drill to gain access to the building.

Police say Hampton fled the scene when they confronted him just outside the coin room.

After pursuing him into the nearby woods on foot, arresting officers say they had to taser Hampton in order to subdue him.

Hampton has been charged with second degree burglary, possession of tools, and obstruction. He is being held at the county jail.
