Admission for the public is free, and refreshments will be served at Gallery 4463, which is at 4463 Cherokee St. in historic downtown Acworth. The retail fine arts gallery and gift shop also offers space for private parties and receptions, rehearsal dinners, concerts and art classes.
“A Splash of Color” is the name the five featured artists collectively chose for the gallery with Director Cathryn M. Green, who is one of the June featured artists. The watercolor-themed show also features Don Maier, Valerie Gaudemer-Maker, Lyse Robitaille-Johnson and Carol Allegood, wife of Acworth Mayor Tommy Allegood.
Carol Allegood’s marriage to the mayor has strengthened the artistic community in Acworth, Green said, describing Tommy Allegood as “bound and determined” in his support of the gallery. Green said she took over as director of Gallery 4463 when founder Clemens Bak stepped aside in December 2013 to found the forthcoming Acworth Cultural Arts Center, a nonprofit organization that will be in the same building as Gallery 4463.
Member artists form a co-op to support Gallery 4463, with monthly dues as well as in staffing, Green said. The 30-plus member team of artists work in media including oils, watercolors, acrylics, pastels, mixed media, photography, glass fusing and blowing, pottery, jewelry, weavings and fashion design.
Suzanne Cooper Morris, a member artist featured in May, said she’s been involved with Gallery 4463 for about six years. Morris said the gallery, which was able to keep its doors open through the recession, provides Acworth with a service.
“To have a gallery of fine art in the suburbs is important, because it provides opportunity for people north of Atlanta, who may not want to drive to Atlanta,” Morris said.
The “service” of fine art means a relationship between the artist and the art buyer, Morris said. “It’s not just worth more monetarily; it’s good for people’s intellect and soul to be able to have a relationship with something that someone created,” Morris said.
For budding artists, Gallery 4463 offers painting classes, including a June class taught by Rosemary Tyler, and a “Painted in One Day” class for adult beginners, which takes place June 21 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. For more information about Gallery 4463 or its classes, visit www.gallery4463.com or email firstname.lastname@example.org.
