Continuing its quarterly tradition of recognizing and awarding excellence in educators and students in the Marietta City school system, the Kiwanis Club of Marietta proudly honored the spring 2014 recipients of the GEM awards during a spirited luncheon at Marietta High School in April.

Kiwanis members Jan Blodgett and Jackie Whitt created the GEM awards in 1996 to recognize educators and students who “go the extra mile” in serving their schools and communities. Nominations honoring these educators of excellence and students of substance are accepted on a quarterly basis from colleagues and voted on by peers. GEM plaques are on display and available for public viewing at each school throughout the system.

The Spring 2014 recipients are Adrianne Norcia and student Tucker Williams for A.L. Burruss Elementary; Erika Blackstock and student Ty Baity for Dunleith; Cindy Smith and student Christian Salazar for Hickory Hills; Natalie Darbey and student Kaylee Nunez for Lockheed; Meredith Cox and student Kenneth L. Gardner for Park Street; Kelly Karr and student Tia Thompson for MCAA; Majid Bassery and student Janeira Sanchez-Pineda for Sawyer Road; Michael Finney and student Martina Durso for West Side; Robin Anderson and student Bowen Mayfield for MSGA; Matthew Head and student Marina Melendez for Marietta Middle; Leon Grant and student Ivan Sanchez for Marietta H.S.; Cynthia DeLuz and student Brittany Blount for MPLC; and Tere Richardson of the Department of Special Services.
