MARIETTA — Rep. Charles Gregory (R-Kennesaw) may have some explaining to do following his loss to Bert Reeves in the Georgia House District 34 race.

A spokesman for the Bert Reeves campaign said it is exploring legal action against Gregory’s campaign over a robocall that went out trying to smear Reeves, a Marietta attorney.

The caller, claiming affiliation with a group called “Global Action for Trans Equality,” said the group was endorsing Bert Reeves “and his partner Matt.”

The caller went on to say if elected Reeves would “continue to stand for marriage equality and equal rights for all people.”

The Reeves campaign was less than pleased.

“We’re going to explore all legal actions against any parties who have engaged in and on behalf of Charles Gregory, including his own campaign committee,” a Reeves’ spokesman told the MDJ on Tuesday.

“A number of other mailers that we believe were done illegally and unethically on behalf of Charles Gregory — there are at least two other quote independent groups that we believe engaged in illegal electioneering, along with a group that did the robocalls with no disclaimer. We believe that these are violations of state law, of federal IRS laws and of the FCC.”

But Gregory said he had nothing to do with the call and questioned how many homes even heard it.

“I haven’t been able to find one single person who’s independent of association with Bert that has received this call,” Gregory said. “Based on that sampling, I’m doubtful whether the call went to any significant group of people. It’s just nonsense, juvenile and absurd.”

Though he doesn’t know who made the call, Gregory said it was “a very low person.”

The anonymous caller insinuates Reeves endorses gay marriage.

“Hi. Please listen to this important message,” the voice says in the call. “Global Action for Trans Equality would like to endorse Bert Reeves for the seat of your next state House Representative. Bert Reeves and his partner Matt have been well-respected attorneys in Marietta for a long time. If elected, Bert Reeves will continue to stand for marriage equality and equal rights for all people. We’re counting on your vote tomorrow.”

Reeves called the tactic unthinkable.

“It’s the dirtiest, nastiest campaign tactic imaginable,” Reeves said. “It was done yesterday and as soon as it started to backfire, they had the audacity to then say that I had created it, which is unbelievable.”

Reeves said the call is in line with other tactics used by Gregory supporters.

“Common sense tells you it was one of the groups that had been doing work for him.”

Reeves added that while unmarried, he has a “wonderful, amazing girlfriend named Amy.”

Truth or Hater

Mr. Reeves protests too loudly.

Sounds like someone may have exposed an unknown truth about Reeves OR, Reeves is just an intolerant, homophobic, HATER (you know how those chamber of commerce folks are).

Only in Cobb County would saying someone will "continue to stand for marriage equality and equal rights for all people” be considered a "smear" campaign. SMH.

Mr. Bert,

Based on who you work for Com360 and their history, I would be careful before I threw rocks when you live in a glass house.

Really? Bert Reeves is talking about being smeared?

And this is even after Reeves(barely) wins?

Do these tax and spend chamber hacks ever stop whining?

Reeves proves he is in fact just another blow-hard spineless, rino, chamber of cronies puke.

That said, just why is Mr. Reeves so upset about gay marriage and his partner?

I find this line funny:

The anonymous caller insinuates Reeves endorses gay marriage.

Umm, the caller ALSO insinuates that he's gay.

Which, BFD.
