Solution offered for filming on Square

DEAR EDITORS:

After reading Tuesday’s MDJ article “Upcoming ‘Selma’ filming expected to disrupt business on the Square,” I would like to propose a win/win solution for the movie company, as well as the local businesses.

If a fair recompensation could be determined by the workers, businesses and movie company for the loss of revenue for the week during the filming, folks would not have to take “the hit in pay.”

In my opinion, the future advantages of being the site of such a notable film more than likely would be a boon to the revenues of restaurateurs and employees.

Also noted in this article is the fact that the film will be produced by Oprah and Brad Pitt. I can’t help but believe that if either of these people were made aware of the financial dilemma happening as a result of their production, that they would see clear to justly take care of those in need.

This is possibly the mos naive and uninformed LTE I have seen in some time.

1. Nobody knows if this film will be "notable" or not.

2. Unless it is a classic film such as GWTW, Raintree County, the Last Picture Show, etc., there will be no special benefit to the are once the cast and crew leave. People do not flock to restaurants and bars unless theya re prominently featured in the film and then the fascination only lasts a couple of weeks.

3. Oprah and Brad Pitt are not even remotely concerned about the effect this filming will have on local business. Neither, it seems, are the city fathers who approved the project.

Having grown up aroynd film making, I am all for Marietta and the surrounding are beenfitting from the filming of movies, but let's nop kid ourselves. Some people and some businesses are gonna take a hit. We need to figure that into the equation and determine how best to minimize that hit.

As a business owner on the Square, I think Oprah giving every business owner a car would be good compensation with Brad Pitt delivering the keys.
