MARIETTA — Police have called off a search for a man accused of attempting to abduct a child.

Officer Mike Bowman said the suspect has been located and is “an innocent elderly man” who meant no harm and is well known in the community.

“We of course erred on the side of caution,” Bowman said about the public announcement sent by the Marietta Police Wednesday afternoon.

Previously, Cobb Police had said an attempted abduction occurred on Chapman Drive off Parliament Road north of Marietta on Tuesday morning.

According to Officer Mike Bowman, a girl was walking near J.J. Daniell Middle School when she was approached by a man with a gray mustache wearing a baseball cap in a black Toyota Camry or Corolla, bearing a Georgia handicap license plate with the numbers 120 or 21.

“The (man) yelled out to her to get in the vehicle as he opened the passenger side door,” Bowman said. When the girl refused, the suspect drove away.

Cobb Police are asking anyone with information to contact the Crimes Against Children’s Unit at 770-801-3470.
