The unbeaten Walton girls tennis team moved one step closer to defending its Class AAAAAA state title, beating Johns Creek 3-0 in Thursday’s quarterfinal.

Katie Riley and Jessica Cramer (6-1, 6-3) and sisters Emily and Grace Gaskins (6-0, 6-0) won in doubles action, while Suzanne Zenoni won 6-3, 6-4 at No. 2 singles.

Walton will face county rival Kennesaw Mountain in the semifinals, with a coin flip to decide the host.

Hillgrove 3, Harrison 0: Hillgrove bested its county and region rival to advance to the Class AAAAAA state semifinals for the first time in team history.

Chioma Okonkwo (6-0, 3-6, 6-1) and Jessica Cantrell (6-2, 6-2) won in the singles slots, while Oliva Brooks and Sarah Simm won 6-0, 6-0 in doubles.

Hillgrove (16-5) will face Alpharetta in the semifinals.


Lassiter 3, Johns Creek 1:
In the deciding slot at No. 1 doubles, Brandon Wortkrotter and Ben Anderson won a tough match 7-5, 1-6, 6-2 to send the Trojans to the Class AAAAAA state semifinals.

Daniel Yun won 6-2, 6-1 at No. 1 singles, followed by a 6-1, 6-2 win by Jonathan Jemison in the third slot.

Lassiter (15-3) will face either Harrison or North Cobb in the semifinals.

Pope 3, Cambridge 1: Michael Busby’s 6-2, 6-4 victory at No. 2 singles clinched the Greyhounds’ victory in the quarterfinals of the Class AAAAA state playoffs.

Austin Bates won 6-0, 6-0 at No. 1 singles for Region 7AAAAA runner-up Pope (17-2), which beat their region rival for the third time this season.

Chase Forbes claimed a 6-2, 6-1 triumph at No. 3 singles for the Greyhounds, who advanced to the state semifinals for the first time since winning the Class AAAA title in 2011.

Pope will play either Glynn Academy or returning runner-up Union Grove in the semifinals.

Mount Paran Christian 3, Holy Innocents’ 1: Will Burton won 7-5, 6-7, 6-1 at No. 2 singles to decide the match and give the Eagles a victory in the quarterfinals of the Class A private-school state playoffs.

Patrick Weindorfer won 6-2, 6-2 at No. 3, while Brent Foster and Adam Rothrock won 7-5, 6-7, 7-5 in doubles action.

Mount Paran (15-1) advanced to the semifinals to face either Athens Academy or Savannah Country Day.


Harrison 140, North Paulding 150:
The Lady Hoyas edged the Lady Wolfpack by 10 strokes at Governor’s Towne Club in Acworth.

Harrison was led by Anna Garcia and Abby Brown, who both shot 46 in the nine-hole match, while Hailey Willman shot 48.

Harrison will now focus its attention on the Class AAAAAA state tournament, which will take place May 19 at Gordon Lakes Golf Club at Fort Gordon.


Kell 20, Riverwood 4:
Talen Francis, Leslie Ferguson, Izzy Palermo, Sarah Bialecki and Jennifer Buckley all scored hat tricks to lead the Lady Longhorns to an undefeated Area 2A-AAAAA record and end the regular season.

Haley Swift helped with five assists and two goals of her own, while goalkeeper Britta Baugh had four saves.

Kell (16-1) will host Lovett on Tuesday in the first round of the state playoffs.
