As of 1:30 p.m. this afternoon the medical status of a FedEx security guard, Christopher Sparkman, 28, of Canton, has improved with a change from critical to serious.

Sparkman, who was shot at close range to the stomach on Tuesday, had another round of surgery earlier today.

A WellStar Health System source says Sparkman is out the operating room in Kennestone Hospital, and the successful surgery is the reason for the improved condition.

Jamie Sparkman released a statement following the status announcement: “We have been overwhelmed by the show of support from the community. My husband, Christopher Sparkman, is out of surgery and by the grace of God on the road to recovery. The recovery process will be a long one, but he will have the love and support of his family each step of the way.”
