MARIETTA — When Lassiter goalkeeper Cara Anderson made her eighth and final save on a 1-on-1 situation during the final minute of Saturday’s game with Walton, a win was guaranteed.

Sophia Watkins scored a free-position goal with 4 seconds left to make it closer, but the Lady Trojans still held on to win a slim 10-9 decision at Frank Fillmann Stadium.

Lassiter (14-2, 6-0 Area 2AAAAAA) remained undefeated in area play with the victory, but it still has two more games to play next week at Roswell and defending state champion Milton.

In Saturday’s game, Lassiter rallied from an early three-goal deficit, and the first half ended in a 5-all tie before the Lady Trojans played the entire second half with a slim lead that didn’t go beyond three goals.

Lassiter got two goals apiece from Alex Fusco, Cydney Tutchton, Mary Carter Putman and Alana Abbott, and one each from Rachael Rankin and Lucy Mills.

“It was a huge win for us,” Lassiter coach Faith Harmeyer said. “It wasn’t pretty at times, and we didn’t make the best decisions, but I was proud of their mental and physical toughness after being down by a few goals.”

It was the final regular-season game for Walton (10-6-1, 6-2), which will likely be the area’s No. 3 seed going into the Class AAAAAA state tournament.

Erin McBride scored twice for Walton during the first 2 minutes of the game. Lassiter answered back with a goal by Fusco, but Walton responded with two straight from Carly White and Laura Jordan.

Lassiter clamped down defensively, took advantage of free-position opportunities and scored four straight to take a 5-4 lead. Its fifth goal came on a bounce shot by Tutchton with 1:49 left to play in the half.

Lizzie Misel tied it for Walton with an unassisted goal 20 seconds later, bringing the score to a 5-all deadlock heading into intermission.

“We did a good job protecting the lead and taking care of the ball in the second half,” Harmeyer said.

Mills scored a free-position goal just after the first minute of the second half to give the Lady Trojans the lead for good, and Lassiter added to it when Abbott scooped up a loose ball around the crease and put it in.

Walton closed the gap when Watkins intercepted a ball and fed it inside to Kylie Holthaus for the goal, but Lassiter kept its distance with back-to-back goals by Rachael Rankin and Fusco, and the Lady Raiders couldn’t do enough to catch up.

McBride was the only multi-goal scorer for Walton, with three. Goalkeeper Emily James had four saves.
