A local man has been released on $35,000 bond after police say he stole a car and committed a number of traffic offenses while fleeing from police.

On March 19, police say Herman Lee Lawson of Atlanta entered an apartment building on Cumberland Parkway in Smyrna at about 10:45 a.m. and stole several items. According to a police report, a neighbor observed Lawson entering the building and called 911, and police spotted Lawson driving less than a mile from the scene. A short chase ensued.

Police say the car Lawson was driving, a 2004 Chrysler Intrepid, was stolen from the mother of Lawson’s children.

According to police, after fleeing from officers pursuing him and driving 60 miles per hour in a 35 mph zone, Lawson crashed into a fence on Orchard Road at Paces ferry Road, but not before hitting a police car on the way.

The police report states the officer inside the car was injured when his airbag deployed.

According to an arrest warrant, Lawson was charged with first-degree burglary, theft by receiving, fleeing and eluding, reckless driving, hit and run, obstruction of law enforcement and driving on a suspended license.
