AUSTELL — Cobb Police say it remains unclear why a driver from Lawrenceville swerved across traffic lanes late Saturday night, resulting in a wreck that took his life.
Cobb Police say the fatal wreck occurred at 10:12 p.m. on Saturday night on Interstate 20, just east of Factory Shoals Road. Tommy Pierson, 51, was driving a green 1994 Ford Explorer eastbound in the far left lane and “for reasons unknown failed to maintain his lane of travel,” said Officer Mike Bowman with Cobb Police.
The Ford struck a 2006 International truck which was traveling in the next lane. The impact forced the Ford towards the concrete jersey wall, Bowman said.
Pierson first steered to the right, traveling across the eastbound lanes, then tried to further correct the path, steering to the left and causing the vehicle to begin a counterclockwise spin.
“The vehicle tripped, became airborne and began to flip end over end coming to a final uncontrolled rest on its roof against the concrete jersey wall,” Bowman said. Pierson was ejected during this collision sequence. He was transported to Grady Memorial Hospital by ambulance, but died as a result of the injuries he received in the collision.
The collision remains under investigation, but no charges are expected to be filed, Bowman said.
