On April 12 from 2 to 6 p.m., the Official Artist of the 140th Kentucky Derby — Susan Easton Burns — will present an Art Talk and Poster Signing at dk Gallery on the Marietta Square.

“Susan was the first artist I asked to be a part of dk Gallery. I was a horse person and knew of Susan’s work from the horse community. She has been our number one artist from day number one,” said Donna Krueger, gallerista of dk Gallery.

“Susan’s style is abstract expressionist with a fresh contemporary energy,” Krueger said.

Krueger said an artist of regional or national stature is selected annually to interpret the Kentucky Derby and its sister race, Kentucky Oaks, by senior management.

Bringing her passion for horses expressed through emotion in her paintings, it seems natural Burns has achieved this accomplishment.

With a farm and horses of her own, Burns said, “I admire and am fascinated with the horses that I know. Excitement, power, sadness, curiousness, fear, anger, frustration, kindness, pain and tolerance are human attributes as well as ways we describe our horses. Horses can express everything for me. I am grateful for all the experiences I’ve had with the many horses I’ve known. They teach me to have the spirit that they have. They teach me how to love and be loved.”

Krueger said, “The fact that a local artist has been chosen for the greatest two minutes in sports is exciting and a unique opportunity to participate in the fanfare.”

“It is a gallerist’s great reward to see an artist grow and become recognized on a national platform for their talent. Susan has accomplished this. I am grateful to Susan for the opportunity to represent her and her talent and in turn, this has allowed dk Gallery to recruit a growing number of very talented artists from across the country and abroad. The ultimate reward is to see the power of art bringing community change and progress,” Krueger said.

Dk Gallery is located at 25 West Park Square, Marietta.

Posters available are for purchase at event. The cost is $40 for the Oaks and $40 for the derby. A new Derby Series is on exhibit at the Gallery on April 12 through end of May.
