Marietta Civitan club members Lela Sanders, Buddy Moor, Ben Phillips and Beth Keller serve chicken pot pie to local homeless individuals and families at the MUST Ministries Loaves and Fishes Community Kitchen on the Jan. 20 national MLK Day of Service.
The Marietta Civitan club is a longtime partner of MUST Ministries, a local philanthropic organization serving the basic needs of our community members, including providing food for the homeless. Marietta’s Civitan chapter has made a commitment to provide dinner at MUST’s Loaves and Fishes Community Kitchen on the 20th of each month, year-round.
Always a rewarding endeavor, club volunteers purchase, deliver and cook the dinner, then don their Civitan aprons before serving the meal to about 70-80 homeless individuals and families living in the area. A hearty entrée such as spaghetti or chicken pot pie is often served with buttered toast and salad for a well-balanced plate.
It was a happy coincidence that their regular monthly service date fell on Martin Luther King, Jr. Day – a national day of service – on Jan. 20. The King Center promotes the holiday as “a day on, not a day off.”
