Causey’s turned an old sauce recipe from their family restaurant in Vienna into a first place prize at state-wide contest.
Smyrna resident Wynn Causey Bakke, of Causey Foods, took home first prize in the barbecue sauce category at University of Georgia’s 2014 Flavor of Georgia contest.
Gov. Nathan Deal and Agriculture Commissioner Gary Black were on hand to congratulate Causey and other Flavor of Georgia winners as part of Georgia Agriculture Awareness Day on March 18 at the Georgia Freight Depot in Atlanta.
Causey’s Sweet N’Smokey BBQ was chosen out of more than 125 Georgia products to compete as one of 35 finalists in Flavor of Georgia 2014 contest. Competition in the barbecue sauce category is always incredibly stiff at Flavor of Georgia. This year, Causey’s beat out nearly two dozen other barbecue sauces to make it to the number one spot.
“We had so many great contestants this year,” said Sharon P. Kane, Flavor of Georgia contest coordinator. “It really highlighted the high caliber of the food products created by Georgians.”
Causey’s Sweet N’Smokey sauce was created at the Causey’s restaurant in Vienna, but it is currently distributed from Smyrna, where Bakke lives.
