AUSTELL — A fatal crash Saturday afternoon north of Interstate 20, in a residential area near Six Flags Over Georgia, involved a van full of children.

At 4:45 p.m. Saturday, Cobb Police say William Cofield of Austell, 47, was traveling northbound in the southbound land of Hillcrest Drive in a blue 2011 Hyundai Sonata.

At the same time, Bertin Vargas of Austell, 37, was driving a tan 2001 Nissan Quest south in the southbound lane of Hillcrest Drive.

While attempting to avoid the collision, Cobb Police say both drivers steered into the northbound lane, where they collided.

Cofield was transported to Grady Memorial Hospital by ambulance and died as a result of his injuries.

Bertin Vargas and Laura Vargas of Austell, 26, a passenger in the van, were transported to Grady Memorial Hospital to be treated for “non-life-threatening” injuries, said Officer Mike Bowman with Cobb Police.

There were four children in the van who were transported to Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta and treated for “non-life-threatening” injuries, Bowman said.

By late Saturday night, Bowman said no charges were expected to be filed as a result of this collision.
