Mr. John H. Smith, age 87 of Jasper, Georgia passed away on Wednesday, March 19, 2014 at the Northside Hospital – Cherokee in Canton, Georgia. Born May 17, 1926 in Winder, Georgia, he was the son of the late Turman Asbury Smith and Ila Looney Smith. John was married to Bettie Simonton in 1949 in Winder, Georgia. They moved to the Atlanta area where John became a bricklayer, then a builder and later a residential developer, primarily in Cobb and Cherokee counties. John and Bettie were happily married for 58 years. At the age of 80 years, he founded and established a non-profit residential children’s home, The Good Shepherd Ranch. It was his passion for the next 7 years and was fully operational in Jasper, Georgia. John was always an advocate for the less-fortunate, was active in the prison ministries, 3 to 5 year old nursery and struggling teenagers. He was a loving and devoted father to Lynn, Wayne and Vicky and was also a beloved grandfather and great-grandfather. Survivors include, DAUGHTERS & SONS-IN-LAW, Vicky and Mike Rampley of Canton, Ga.; Lynn and Fred Hanna of Marietta, Ga.; SON & DAUGHTER-IN-LAW, Wayne and Debbie Smith of Cedartown, Ga.; GRANDCHILDREN, Steven Smith, Ethan Smith, Misty Smith, Becky Wade, Roman Hanna, Ashly Hass, Amber Rampley and Amanda Rampley; 14 GREAT-GRANDCHILDREN; BROTHERS, Jim Smith and Enoch Smith both of Winder, Ga.; Several Nieces and Nephews also survive. Funeral Services are scheduled for 3:00 p.m., Friday, March 21, 2014 at the First Baptist Church Woodstock, with the remains placed in state at the Church at 2:00 p.m., the Dr. Johnny Hunt will officiate with the interment to follow in Macedonia Memorial Park in Cherokee County. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Thursday, 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family has asked that donations be made to The Good Shepherd Ranch, 601 Moore Rd., Jasper, Georgia 30143.
