Ten building permits were issued in Smyrna in December and another 21 in January. That’s the most issued of any city in Cobb.
Unincorporated Cobb County reported 70 permits issued in December and 68 in January.
A total of 91 permits were issued in December and 101 in January across the county.
For all of 2013, 1,522 permits were issued. That’s 41 percent more than the 1,077 that were issued in 2012.
Ken Suddreth, community development director for Smyrna, said it’s not just one development that’s driving the city’s growth.
“When you look at the big picture, especially over the last 12 months, they are scattered throughout Smyrna,” Suddreth said. “It’s not just one particular development.”
That’s a good sign, he said.
“It means when that one development is over, we’re not going to fall over,” Suddreth said.
The city’s planning commission is getting more requests from developers to rezone properties for residential uses.
“People love not only the convenience that the city offers with regard to downtown, the airport, but also the quality of life that’s within the city,” Suddreth said.
In December 2013, Acworth had one permit issued, Austell and Kennesaw both gave two and Marietta issued six. In January, Acworth had four and Marietta issued eight.
