ACWORTH — Acworth Alderman Bob Weatherford announced his resignation Thursday to run for the seat being vacated by Commissioner Helen Goreham.

Weatherford, who has served on the Acworth Board of Aldermen for 12 years, will run in the May 20 Republican primary.

Acworth Mayor Tommy Allegood said a special election will take place to fill the non-partisan, at-large Post 3 seat on May 20.

“We’re excited for him,” Allegood said. “We hope that we’ll have an opportunity for Bob to represent our city, and so we’re excited about the opportunity for Bob.”

Weatherford joins at least four other candidates in the race to replace Goreham, including former county Chairman Bill Byrne, Angela Barner, a Realtor and stepdaughter of late west Cobb Commissioner Harvey Paschal, retired Marietta Assistant Fire Chief

Scott Tucker and insurance agent Glenn Melson.

Weatherford, 65, and his wife, Lori, have four children and one grandchild.

“I’ve served the citizens of Acworth and Cobb County because we are in Cobb County, and I just want to expand that to all of west Cobb, District 1,” Weatherford said. “I think I have a good track record of responsibility and budget and consensus building, and I think I’ve got that, and I have a lot of contacts, and people have asked me to run, and the main thing is I may not agree with you, but I’ll talk to you, and we’ll work out a consensus. I think some of the other candidates have a ‘my way or the highway’ attitude if you know what I mean.”

Weatherford was a reserve police officer for more than 20 years and spent eight years at the Acworth Police Department before being elected to Acworth’s governing board.

He is the recipient of two Silver Stars for Bravery from the American Police Hall of Fame, was the VFW Officer of the Year in 1997 and Cobb Chamber of Commerce’s Officer of the Year in 1996.

Good luck, anyone is better than Bully Bedmister Byrne. Be prepared for Billy Boy to start slinging mud your way.
