A recent letter to the editor by Mikel S. Crowley, senior marketing consultant for Crowder Realty, laments the decision of the Housing Authority to sell the former Lyman Homes property at market value, rather than at a greatly discounted value to permit much lower home prices at that prime site.
In fact, the Housing Authority had zero choice in the matter. We could either sell it at market value and use the proceeds elsewhere (by law strictly for the benefit of public housing or Section 8 residents) or sell it at a reduced value to create housing or assistance, by law, for public housing or Section 8 residents.
Our prior program to assist new teachers and public safety officers using funds from selling public housing property regrettably ended when the government changed the rules to limit use of the proceeds solely for public housing or Section 8 families.
In short, not only was what we did a sound business decision to maximize return on public assets, we simply had no legal authority to do what Ms. Crowley suggests.
