MARIETTA — Marietta City students will be going to school earlier and staying later during the month of March, if the school board votes to extend the school days to make up for snow days at a special meeting tonight.

Since Jan. 1, Marietta students have lost nine days of school to snow and winter weather, said Board Chairman Randy Weiner.

The lost instructional time worried board members and administrators within the school system. As the end of the school year is filled with tests, and board members wanted to make sure students were adequately prepared for those tests, Weiner said.

Superintendent Emily Lembeck spoke with school principals and administrators and devised a make-up plan for the lost hours.

If the board approves the plan, Monday through Thursday starting March 3, Marietta students will arrive at school 15 minutes earlier and stay 45 minutes later, making up one hour each day, Weiner said.

Friday schedules will remain the same.

The extra minutes will add up to 16 hours over the course of the month, Weiner said, enough to make up a significant amount of instructional time.

After March 27, the last Thursday of the month, students will resume normal school schedules, Weiner added.

Marietta students and teachers are not going to make up the four lost days of school, which were declared a state of emergency by Gov. Deal, Weiner said.

All after-school activities, including sports and clubs will be delayed one hour every afternoon, Weiner said.

Parents who have scheduled doctor’s appointments and other appointments will be allowed to pick up their students earlier from school during the month as well.

The board will vote on the proposed lengthened school days at 5:30 p.m. in the district’s central offices, 250 Howard St, Marietta.

There is no learning that happens at the end of a day that long. Board members are kidding themselves.
