Boy Scout Troop 554 from Whitefield Academy in Smyrna recently visited the National Infantry Museum at Fort Benning and spent the night on the battleship USS Alabama in Mobile, Ala. This is their second January trip that centered on the U.S. Armed Forces. Last year, the troop visited an active duty Trident submarine at King’s Bay Navy Base. This year, the Scouts learned a lot about the life of U.S. infantrymen throughout history and sailor’s lives aboard a WWII era battleship.

The museum is a relatively new addition to Ft. Benning and chronicles the U.S. Army fighting infantryman over the years. The boys toured the museum, participated in a firearms training simulator and spent the night at a Ft. Benning campground. The next day, the troop drove to Mobile and spent the night on the USS Alabama.

The Whitefield group of 27, including Scouts and adults, was one of over a dozen Troops and 200 Boy Scouts that spent the night on the ship. A highlight of the trip was a massive game of “manhunt” (a boy’s version of hide-and-seek) on the ship that night. Ft. Benning and the USS Alabama Battleship Commission have programs designed specifically for Boy Scouts and were helpful in planning the event.

Scouts attending included Preston Bates, Josh Brown, Crawford Folk, Colsen Gulledge, Stephen Hellier, William Hellier, Holden Hosch, Cameron Hughes, Daniel Justice, Luke Legg, Sean Morris, Donovan Pearce, Ethan Powell, Leighton Scott, Will Thomas, Demetri Tsompanas along with adults Sammy Powell (Scoutmaster) Steve Hellier (Assistant Scoutmaster), Slade Gulledge, David Scott, Michael Tsompanas, and Don Pearce.
