Prep Roundup: Walton rallies for comeback region rival Etowah

Walton rallied from deficits of 12 at halftime and 10 at the end of the third quarter to beat Etowah 62-61 Tuesday and earn a Region 5AAAAAA victory.

Playing their fourth road game in five days, the Raiders (16-3, 7-2) outscored the Eagles 23-12 in the final quarter to win. Elijah Weems scored 12 of his 22 points in the final period, which saw Walton go 9-of-11 from the free throw line and take its first lead of the game wth 1:10 remaining.

Weems made two free throws with 20 seconds on the clock for a 3-point Raiders lead. The Eagles, who made 10 3-pointers in the game and five in the first quarter, missed two 3-point trys late, but got a layup at the buzzer for the final score.

Chad Clay added 14 points for Walton, which didn’t make a 3-pointer in a game for the first time this year. Maurice Gibson had nine second-half points and Blake Poole came off the bench to take two fourth quarter charges that assisted in the comeback.

Walton hosts Lassiter on Friday.

n Lassiter 38, Cherokee 37 (OT): Evan Dunham’s field goal with under a minute to play in overtime proved to be the difference as Lassiter won a Region 5AAAAAA game for the first time this season.

Cherokee failed to take the lead on three scoring opportunities following Dunham’s basket. Two of those possessions occurred after the Warriors rebounded two missed free throws. Cherokee held for the last shot, but could not convert.

Lassiter (4-15, 1-7) led by two with 17 seconds, but turned the ball over. Cherokee’s Jeremiah Gill sank the putback of his own miss at the buzzer to send the game into overtime tied 34-all.

Justin Jackson drained four 3-pointers and finished with a double-double of 14 points and 12 rebounds for Lassiter. Dunham had 10 points.

Lassiter is at Walton on Friday.

n Pebblebrook 64, McEachern 61: Pebblebrook nailed 12 3-pointers in the game with half coming in the fourth quarter.

Ty Hudson hit the game-winning shot from beyond the range with a second left to play.

McEachern was leading by as many as seven in the fourth quarter before the Falcons got hot from long range.

Hudson had 31 points to lead the Falcons and Thrae Mitchell added 18.

For McEachern, Freddy Brown had 26 points for the Indians. Logan McIntosh had 18 points.

McEachern will host Hillgrove on Friday.

n North Cobb 65, South Cobb 58 (OT): Daniel Beausejour scored 29 points and pulled down eight rebounds as the Warriors downed the Eagles in a Region 4AAAAAA contest.

North Cobb (7-14, 5-7) led 54-53, but South Cobb’s Josh Holiday free throw with 4 seconds to play sent the game to overtime.

The Warriors managed to get up four points early in the extra period, and then Micah Woodard made 3 of 4 free throws down the stretch to seal the victory.

Woodard finished the game with 16 points and eight assists, and Devin Jackson added seven points and seven boards.

The Eagles (7-12, 4-7) had five players in double figures. Malik Johnson led the way with 16, points, Brandon Barnes and James Coats each had 11 and Holiday and Aaryon Davis each finished with 10.

North Cobb will host Harrison on Friday. South Cobb will travel to Lithia Springs on Saturday.

n Kennesaw Mountain 69, Campbell 68 (OT): A turnover in overtime allowed Maceo Inman to hit a 3-pointer at the buzzer, giving Kenneaw Mountain a key Region 4AAAAAA home victory.

Andrew Jimenez, who had 21 points, logged one of his four assists on Inman’s game-winner. Campbell missed a last second shot that would have broken a 60-all tie at the end of regulation.

Inman had 14 points for the Mustangs (7-11, 3-8), while Nigel Hayes had 13 and Josh Craig 10.

Michael Olmert had 24 points to lead Campbell.

Kennesaw Mountain is at Pebblebrook on Friday, while Campbell hosts Marietta.

n Kell 61, Riverwood 45: Kell held on to a slim second half lead, but when Riverwood cut it to four points in the fourth quarter, Kell went on a 10-0 run to seal it.

The Longhorns has now won two straight Region 7AAAAA games.

Grant Bryant had 24 points to lead Kell (8-12, 5-4) and pulled down 16 rebounds. Maurice Summerour had 12 points and five assists. Kendrick Summerour was also in double figures with 10.

Kell will play at Osborne on Friday.

n North Cobb Christian 79, King’s Ridge Christian 43: Stephon Jelks had a double-double with 15 rebounds and a career-high 38 points to lead North Cobb Christian to the Region 6A win at home.

Hunter Ware added 15 points and five assists for the Eagles (15-4, 7-1), who led 50-25 at halftime.

Trey Kalina contributed seven points and 15 boards, while Keyshawn Butts chipped in seven assists, five steals, eight boards and two blocks.

North Cobb Christian is at Whitefield Academy on Friday.

n Mount Paran Christian 54, Walker 29: Mount Paran Christian outplayed Walton in the first three frames, keeping the Wolverines in single digits in all three frames.

Emoni Williams had 17 points to lead the Eagles, who had a 33-19 lead at the end of three quarters. Zach Strong had 11 points and eight rebounds and Jack Rowan had 10 points and seven rebounds.

Williams also had five assists and four steals.

Zach Eikost led Walker with eight points.

Mount Paran (5-11, 2-7) will play at King’s Ridge on Friday.

n Whitefield Academy 71, St. Francis 63: Whitefield Academy got hot out of the gate and was already ahead 9-0 after the first minute of the game and never lost its lead the rest of the game.

Berto Dryden finished the game with 18 points and made 9-of-10 free throws down the stretch to ice the game. Eric Lockett finished with 15 points and eight rebounds. Courtney Alexander led defensive with 14 rebounds and added four blocks.

Whitefield (13-5, 7-1) will host North Cobb Christian on Friday.

n Dominion Christian 60, Holy Spirit 49: A dominating third quarter was key as the Knights won the GISA Region 1AAA game.

Dominion (8-7, 3-1) had a 22-5 edge in the third. It was outscored 44-38 otherwise.

Jordan Dorsey finished with 20 points and five steals, while Tate Cooney had 17 points and four steals. Nick Bradley scored 13.

Dominion will travel to Trinity Christian on Friday.

n Shiloh Hills 51, Killian Hill Christian 33: The Challengers ended their regular season by winning their 11th straight game.

Austin Greenway led Shiloh Hills (18-4) with 16 points. Jon Allen finished with 12 points and 10 rebounds. Trey Bleck also had 12 points. Riley Layton had 11 points and 12 boards.

Shiloh Hill will await the seeding of the GCAA tournament, which starts Feb. 4.


n North Cobb 53, South Cobb 21: North Cobb held a 44-11 halftime lead and cruised to the Region 4AAAAAA road win.

Kyrie’ Chandler paced the Lady Warriors (14-6, 6-6) with 21 points. She also had five assists. Aniya Corley added 10 points and seven assists. Kristian Carter totaled 12 rebounds and five points.

Chandler and Corley combined to score 29 of North Cobb’s 44 first half points.

Alex Brown had 12 points for South Cobb.

North Cobb hosts Harrison on Friday, while South Cobb is at Lithia Springs on Saturday.

n Campbell 49, Kennesaw Mountain 42: The Lady Spartans built a 12-point first half lead, which was large enough to hold off a surging Kennesaw team on the road in the Region 4AAAAAA game.

Campbell’s scoring was balanced with Julie McKie being the only double-digit scorer with 11 points. Marisa Hall had eight points and Simone Spencer and Mikayla Lee both had seven.

Miranda McClure had 15 rebounds and Hall added five steals.

Jaylah Car led Kennesaw Mountain with 15 points.

Campbell (15-5, 8-3) will play at Marietta on Friday.

n McEachern 77, Pebblebrook 46: After spending the weekend in Brooklyn, the Lady Indians got back into Region 4AAAAAA play with a win.

McEachern (14-2, 9-0) was never threatened, taking a 23-point lead into halftime.

Caliya Robinson and Taylor Gordon each had 11 points, with KlinTisha Martin and Audrisha Williams contributing 10 apiece. Robinson also had seven rebounds and seven blocks for the Lady Indians, who will host archrival Hillgrove on Friday.

Brandi Brown scored a game-high 17 points, while Whitney Young added 13 for Pebblebrook, which will host Marietta on Saturday.

n Lassiter 53, Cherokee 38: Unable to gain much breathing room in the first half, the Lady Trojans had more than enough in the second.

Lassiter (10-9, 5-3) had a 30-19 edge in the third and fourth quarters.

Grace Keheley scored a game-high 14 points for the Lady Trojans, who shot 26-for-37 from the free-throw line. Maeve Vitale had 13, while Gabby Garza had nine.

Lassiter will travel to Walton on Friday.

n Mount Paran Christian 68, Walker 33: Outscoring Walker 22-4 in the second quarter was what Mount Paran needed to set the tone. The Lady Eagles started attacking inside, which made a difference.

Que Morrison had 24 points to lead the Lady Eagles. Renee Van Horn had 18 points.

Collier Middleton scored 20 points to lead Walker.

n Holy Spirit 43, Dominion Christian 13: Baily Fawcett had 10 rebounds for the Lady Knights, who suffered another lopsided loss.

Aubrie McDuffie added nine rebounds.

n Shiloh Hills 51, Killian Hill Christian 34: Shiloh Hills concluded its regular season with a victory and a 15-6 record and is awaiting to its first round opponent of the GCAA tournament.

Samantha Henderson had 20 points and eight rebounds to lead the Lady Challengers. Kayla Allen had five 3-pointers for 15 points. Hannah Manross added seven points.

The Lady Challengers broke the game open in the fourth quarter by outscoring Killian Hill 16-9.
