AUSTELL — Cobb Police arrested an Austell man nearly a month after they say he conducted an illegal traffic stop while impersonating a police officer.

Deronta Franklin, 46, who lives off Six Flags Drive, was arrested by Cobb Police on Wednesday on charges of conducting a traffic stop Dec. 12, in which police say he used blue flashing lights and a siren on his personal vehicle, a 2003 Dodge Durango.

A man stopped inside the Lake Crossing apartment complex off Six Flag Drive, believing Franklin was “employed or retired from the Fulton County Sheriff’s Office,” the warrant said.

Police say Franklin was wearing a polo with a sewn-on patch from Fulton County, as well as a neck badge.

On Dec. 26, a police officer interviewed Franklin at his apartment. Franklin told the officer he was on “reserve duty with the Fulton County Sheriff’s Office” and presented credentials, according to Cobb police.

A check of the Fulton database Jan. 2 revealed there was never an officer by Franklin’s name. The investigator was told Franklin had been in the Fulton jail “several times, two of which were for impersonating a police officer,” the warrant said.

Franklin was arrested on two felony charges of impersonating an officer and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, as well as a misdemeanors for driving with an unauthorized blue light, carrying concealed weapon without a license and pointing a gun at another person, according to the arrest report.

He was given a $25,000 bail and was released on bond Saturday afternoon.
