Prep Roundup: Sprayberry rallies to beat Pope, strengthen region lead

Sprayberry cemented its hold of first place in Region 7AAAAA’s southern half Wednesday, beating Pope 67-60 at the Hound Pound.

Pope (10-6, 4-2) led by two after the first quarter, but Sprayberry (12-4, 6-0) took momentum with a 22-11 edge in the second and never again trailed.

David Tshamala scored a team-high 23 points for the Yellow Jackets, adding three steals. Nkem Ojeh had a double-double of 18 points and 11 rebounds, while Armel Potter finished with 12 points, five rebounds and seven assists.

Pope’s Garrick DeBowles matched Tshamala with 23 points, while Chase Hutchins had 14 and Tyler Borko 10.

Sprayberry will host North Springs on Friday, while Pope will be at Sequoyah.

Kell 98, Osborne 78: The Longhorns broke a two-year-old team record for points in a game, winning the offensive-minded Region 7AAAAA matchup.

Kell (6-8, 3-3) reached 98 with about 20 seconds left, passing the previous mark of 96 set Jan. 6, 2012 against Douglas County. The Longhorns had a few attempts at reaching 100, but their shot attempts fell short.

Grant Bryant had a double-double, with game highs of 27 points and 14 rebounds. Kendrick Summerour added 23 points and seven assists, while Maurice Summerour had 13 points.

Kyrie Hogan and Delone Murphy each had 18 points for Osborne (12-5, 4-3), while D’Haire Haney had 17.

Kell will travel to Forsyth Central on Friday. Osborne will be at Northview.

North Cobb Christian 71, Mount Pisgah Christian 54: North Cobb Christian held a 31-15 halftime lead and cruised to the Region 6A victory.

Kendall Crute had 19 points, seven assists and three steals for the Eagles (11-3, 4-0), while Stephon Jelks added 16 points and 12 rebounds.

Trey Kalina contributed 10 points, 11 rebounds and four blocks, Hunter Ware had 11 points and Keyshawn Butts gad eight points, eight rebounds and five steals.

North Cobb Christian will host Walker on Friday.

Allatoona 70, North Paulding 48: Holding a 14-point first-quarter lead, Allatoona erupted to outscore North Paulding 28-5 in the second quarter, en route to the Region 5AAAAA home victory.

Daniel Fowler had 10 points, six rebounds and five assists for Allatoona (14-0, 6-0). Ephraim Tshimanga had 17 poins and four steals, while Rodney Brown chipped in 10 points and five rebounds, and Bradley Brevet added 10 points.

Allatoona will host Woodland-Bartow on Friday.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Hillgrove 70, Kennesaw Mountain 32:
Down five after a sluggish first quarter, the Lady Hawks turned on the jets from there and still cruised to a lopsided Region 4AAAAAA victory.

Hillgrove (13-2, 6-1) had a 59-16 edge over the final three periods, including a 14-0 shutout of Kennesaw Mountain (4-8, 2-6) in the fourth.

Mackenzie Engram and Tene Thompson each had double-doubles for Hillgrove. Engram finished with 22 points and 11 rebounds, to go with four steals, while Thompson had 14 points and 10 rebounds with three steals.

Hillgrove will travel to Campbell on Friday for the first of two region games in as many days.

Aubrie Anderson had nine points — all in the first quarter — for Kennesaw Mountain, which will be at Harrison on Friday.

Harrison 71, South Cobb 43: Sydne Wiggins scored 25 points as the Lady Hoyas cruised to the Region 4AAAAAA win.

Wiggins also had seven rebounds and five assists.

Bailey Cross scored 11, while Kaylyn Brooks and Raicheal Tringali each had eight for Harrison (11-5, 4-3), which will host Kennesaw Mountain on Friday.

Pope 71, Sprayberry 46: Pope led 28-12 at the end of the first quarter and cruised to the Region 7AAAAA win at home.

Kierra Henry had 23 points for the Lady Greyhounds (9-7, 4-2), while Esther Paulk had 13 and Bria Johnson 12. Paulk made three straight 3-pointers in the first quarter to build Pope’s lead.

Kayla Swain led Sprayberry (4-12, 1-5) with 20 points. Dyiesha Brown had eight.

Pope is at Sequoyah on Friday, while Sprayberry will host North Springs.

Allatoona 56, North Paulding 52: Allatoona overcame a North Paulding rally, en route to a Region 5AAAAA home win.

The Lady Buccaneers (8-8, 4-3) led 11-0 at the end of the first quarter, but the Lady Wolfpack took a 44-43 lead in the fourth. Allatoona went 9-of-12 from the free-throw line in the last 2 minutes to retake the lead and get the win.

The Lady Buccaneers were 21-of-32 from the line overall, compared to 3-of-10 for North Paulding.

Meredith Tilton had five 3-pointers and finished with 19 points for Allatoona. Brianna Middleton added 17 points and 15 rebounds.

Allatoona will host Woodland-Bartow on Friday.

Weber 35, Dominion Christian 20: Bailey Fawcett scored a team-high 10 points as the Lady Knights lost the GISA region game.

Christiana Green had eight points for Dominion, which will host Deerfield-Windsor on Friday.
